    Hi Guys,

We're a group of masters students developing a social network for graduates in Ireland as part of our final year assessment.
The aim of the site is to build a stronger relationship between graduates and their colleges.
We want your input, what do you think would make a good graduate social network website?

Any suggestion accepted big or small?

    Thanks

With all due respect, you would be just reinventing the wheel. i.e. FaceBook / Bebo etc. What is the exact aim of the site?

    The idea:
Graduates tend to lose contact with their college as they progress in their careers. Colleges have the wrong details and can't contact their alumni. No contact means no benefactors!!

So, its big bucks if you can develop a website or a platform that can be intergrated into the colleges own website as social network.

already done....the college or university shouold have a CRM application (such as Microsoft CRM) in place with a web front-end to allow users/former students to update their records. The college can then use this information for mailers and campaigns.

    i agree ...
moreover -quote from wikipedia.org Facebook-"The website's name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community that some American colleges give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus."
So the main intent of FB was to connect students.

and there are other social network like schoolfriends.ie, classmate.ie, that are trying to be a platform for students adn ex schoolmates..

    ...

Actually i just went on to schoolfriends.ie and it's a new name www.parlus.com It looks completely different, and it seems that you can earn points by using it..
and you can convert these points to shares in the website..
    thats something new ;)

They would technically be worthless unless the website made Google amounts of money.

Mate, rest the idea. Its been done and you'll only waste your precious time. Unless you have a seriously new approach to the "social networking" principle it won't work out, become profitable or be enjoyable.

    i see your point..
but at the same time they are trying to reward members for what they do on the website...while FB and Bebo are just trying to find a way to make money.
You really become part of a community and a website...

I'd rather be bombarded with advertisements on Bebo / FB than own 10 cent worth of a worthless site. IMHO

    Hi yddib,
I agree with the others that building another social network just would'nt work. It's not impossible to successfully build another social network but you would have to do something really special to even stand a chance.

A great question to ask yourself is "is the product(your social network)good enough that the people using it will want to tell their friends about it?Is it that much different and unique from the other networks? If it's not something people want to talk about then brainstorm and find another idea.

I hope this helps and i wish ye all the best.

You've missed the boat. Invest in something else "unique". Move on.
