Going to Saudi for 3 weeks

My friend is going to Saudi for 3 weeks at short notice, and has discovered that the roaming charges are huge for his Irish mobile in Saudi. He will have a work laptop and is not sure if he can download a voip program so I was wondering if there are any other options to use his mobile as cheaply as possible?
    Cheers...

    What make/model is his mobile?

Some of the Nokias have a SIP VOIP client installed on them, so he could use it with Blueface if he had access to a WiFi Hotspot.

Another option is to download fring (www.fring.com) to his mobile and can also use Blueface with it too.

Fairly sure its an older phone, so probably wont work. If he used the go mobile option from blueface, would he still get caught for charges on incoming calls?

If he expects to make a lotta calls : and assuming his hotel has wired internet access in the room ; buy an ata on ebay 15-25 euro this enables a regular phone, dect or wired to act as a voip phone. An ata is about size of a cigarette packet . May work with hotel phone

Before he goes plug ata into his broadband router and configure to work with his voip provider. config takes less than ten mins. Bring ata to saudi and plug into internet point in room. He will also need to take a phone , preferably a small one. Connect phone to ATA and call for free .

Once back in Dublin he continues to use ata and phone for calls without having to turn on or access his pc/laptop

Using VOIP assumes that access to VOIP services are not blocked by the local ISP who probably also has the telephone monopoly.

Go Mobile allows making cheap calls from your mobile when you are in IRL/UK to worldwide destinations.
If you are abroad, that is not interesting at all since you'll pay roaming charges to your mobile provider.

What he could do with blueface (or maybe with VoIPStunt or VoiceCheap) is to get a pay as you go account (from 5 euros) and then use a softphone on his laptop (Xlite is a free softphone which works quite well)

Then, he'll be able to make/receive calls as if he was in Ireland; if he can connect to the Internet and if the local ISP doesn't block VoIP.

What about using Maxroam.com (Irish company Cork based). He should be at least able to reduce his roaming bill that way.
