tbh, 20k is a bit much, might have low miles but its a old merc regardless, id give 20 euro and bus fair home, but Really...

its worth 12-15 at best. a neighbour around the back from me had several, 1 notable a ex african embassy car in wine... he paid 7 for it there and sold it for 15 here like her did all of them ( about 9 in total he had )

Its very nice, lovely reg, but way OTT pricewise. I reckon 12k would be all the way, though 280E saloons are scarce.

    Also its a W114, not a 115 as stated.

Is he having a laugh at €20,000!?

I'd say €10k would be enough, and even that's pushing it.

My Dad had a pale blue 280E back in 1983 was a 72 I think , had the old style steering wheel in white and 1/4 lights on the doors, reg was VIE 650 or 650 VIE , I can never remember which. I'd never seen another Irish reg one until today.

VIE650 it would have been, that would make it a late 72/early73 clare reg car.

I think yer man selling the one above is pushing it with the price because of the irish reg(its a 1976 cork city reg alright,so it seems genuine enough)You would really have to want one!!

€10k is even too much! OMG I must live abroad for too long already! (less than a year!)

we were considering buying this beauty
    http://www.sahibinden.com/sahibinden_hastasina_orjinalWQQaXQQ4812463WQQpXQQdisplayitem

ok link is in Turkish, but trust me, this car is gorgeous, and restored to new. 8000 YTL is about €4500.

And Turkey is not far behind us whenit comes to RT and pricing of new cars, Here cars do not loose value as quickly as in Ireland and it is still WAY cheaper than €20.

Am still trying to convince the OH that I would look very cool driving this little beaut - but he is being boring ans sensible and wants to get a people carrier :(

    Smashing looking car though.
    Wow - the interior!

Looks lovely. At that price, though, I think it'll be around for a while. I just sold my pagoda today for €15,500, the market really is on its knees.

I have a bug with the reg 133PI but it's recorded on the log book as a '72. Funnily though, there are certain parts on the car that weren't introduced til '73 (they *could* conceivably have been retrofitted with a lot of work) but that model (1303) was extinct by '76 which I've learned from above would be the year of the reg number.

I fear now that the reg/log book might have been bodged by a previous owner. To be honest it's not really a big issue, the age of the car is immaterial because it now has a '55 body on it, see the link in my signature, below. Only the likes of carchaeologist will ever know the body is wrong for the reg...;)

Im not that good with spotting differences in beetle body types,id have some idea, but im no expert, though a 55 oval shell on a ***PI plate is a bit of a giveaway!!:D
I would wonder why the book was bodged though, does the number on the book match the number on the 'pan?It was probably done to get the nice reg 133PI.Maybe it was a later pan that was fitted to it?

I have a feeling there is something dodgy with that reg. I think I have seen a photo of a red Mark II cortina with that same reg. Will double check tomorrow.

I have the log book here, a replacement from '97 but the chassis number is recorded as a '72 chassis number, beginning with "112", the first digit denoting "type1" (beetle), the second digit denoting "standard beetle" and the third the year of registration (i.e. the "2" of 1972).

The log book clearly states "133PI" and the date of first registration as XX/04/1972

However, on some investigation, a '72 1303 model should have a registration starting with "132" where the "3" denotes "1303". The car itself is fairly obviousy a '73 1303 so there must have been some jiggery pokery with log books in this car's chequered past. I'm the ninth owner BTW.

    from: http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm

    VIN: 112229XXXX
Year: 1972 -UK Historic Tax class
    Manufacturer: Volkswagen
    Model: Standard Beetle (11)
    Serial Production No.: 29XXXX

sorry for the complete thread hijack :o

W115 means it's a 4-pot and al others are W114, or is it not that simple?

Jesus that is cheap. I presume cash flow pressures forced you to sell. Would you not rather have taken a hit on the Porsche, or is that sold already too?

What should the pagoda have made if the market was strong?

The way I looked at it is things are getting worse, not better. Plus, the car was starting to get a little frilly around the edges - another winter outside wouldn't have been kind to it. Add in problems with parking and the need to pay for the Forester and it was just time for it to go. The Porsche is for sale, but I use it every day so i'm not as bothered about when it sells.
What should the pagoda have made if the market was strong?
A trader offered me €20,000 for it at the beginning of June, but I felt €23-24,000 was achievable. After a while with no bites I called him back in mid-August, by which time his offer had dropped to €12,000. Nothing like hindsight, is there?

..........yes its pretty much that simple, though the same rules dont apply to either is predeccesor or its replacement.

Yes!!Has the whole market gone the same do you reckon,or is it only the more expensive cars?

I'd say the more expensive cars have been hit harder, given that they're luxury purchases and potential buyers typically have other financial responsibilities.

There does seem to be alot of overpriced stuff out there, but the good stuff will always find buyers i suppose.

...and (here's hoping..) that rarer, classics, as distinct from modern ordinary cars, can weather the slide a bit better. In the long run, they don't have as far to fall, and so should be a reasonable bet for the long run.

    Well, here's hoping, anyway...........:o
