Best control surface for Protools LE?

Hi folks... My set up is a home studio (I'm a newbie) primarily for recording my acoustic drums. I generally have 9 mics on the kit at any time. I will also be using my set up to do full mixes (with bass, guitars, keys & vox from other band members/collaborators)… so I’m not just using my set up for tracking drums.

    I'm running PTLE 7.4 on an iMac (dual core/2Ghz/2Gb RAM). I have a Digidesign 003 rack & Behringer ADA8000.

I currently have a BCF 2000, which works as a basic control surface with PT via baby Mackie HUI emulation. Frankly it's not great with PT. I've heard it's much better with other DAWs, so I'm selling it & looking for something more suitable. I've had it for a few months, but rarely used it. So I'm a mouse merchant at present & I just can't get into it (it makes me feel like I'm still in my day job too!). Also, since I'm more used to PCs than Macs, I'm just not getting around PT as quickly as I'd like. So...

I've been researching control surfaces for the past while, and it seem there are only 2 options for my set up:

    1. Digidesign's Command 8 (specifically designed for PT, but seems to get a less favourable time from users in general...not sure if this s down to generic anti Digidesign sentiment or not)
    2. Mackie Control (a generic controller, but seems to integrate very well with Protools via Mackie HUI).

I'm keeping an eye on EBay etc (I def won't be buying new at > €1200!)... both seem to come up for sale 2nd hand regularly, so not sure what that tells me?

    Price-wise, they're about the same 2nd hand - probably around €500-600.

Can anybody enlighten me on which would best suit my needs?

    Thanks

Check out the Motormix, haven't used one myself, but it looks good.

    get a track ball..

I have the mackie, 2 infact , a seldom touch them. the motor mix could be handy just for the faders.

Yeah, was thinking I might need a trackball even if I got the Command 8 (the Mackie has a jog wheel built in).

Anybody else got any experience using either the Mackie or Copmmand 8 with Protools LE?... very few other control surfaces are still supported in 7.4 as far as I can tell.

Are they worth spending €500-600 on from a workflow/comfort perspective?

The Motormix appears to be one of those with limited/no support in 7.4

I used the command 8 a good bit a few years ago. And the digi002 (non-rack version).

Pretty meh to be honest. As was said, you get a lot less use out of them than you would think.

Makes you feel like you're a big hotshot engineer sitting behind real faders for a about a minute and a half. Then you sort of see the gimmickry inherent in such an idea.

    Get a trackball imo.
