Camara Advice - Point & Shoot for wife.

I'm thinking of getting a new camera for my wife to replace the Panasonic TZ1 that I got for her about 3 years ago. Now the normal choice would be to upgrade to the latest model from the same line (TZ5) but about 6 months ago the camera developed a fault. When using the flash, 2/3 photos will either be too dark or too bight as the shutter isn't syncing properly with the flash. Panasonic can fix it for €150 but I'm thinking that it isn't worth spending that money on a repair.
Various forums report the fault to be common enough and not repairable with a firmware upgrade.

The TZx range is perfect because of the smallness of the camera, ease-of-use with a powerful optical zoom but I feel that I should be avoiding the make due to the previous problems.

I've been out of the loop regarding point-and-shoot cameras so is there anybody out there that is streets ahead of the other manufactures or are most cameras in the same price range about the same these days?

I have heard that the Canon range in the P&S are very good. Then if she is familar with the Panasonic it may not be a bad choice. Cameras in this price range are ussually not wort repairing as the costs are large percentage of a newer & better model.
