Wrestling And Submission Wrestling Tournament

    Ladies And Gentlemen,

Although its understood that this website is used predominantly by posters from the south of Ireland, i also know that a few 'Nordies' post here also.

With this in mind, I have been asked to post this on the website by the organisers of these competitions.

On the 27th September there will be two competition mats in operation at the Northern Ireland Closed Freestyle Wrestling Competition in Derry. Entries are strictly restricted to competitors from North of the border.

Mat 1 will have Freestyle wrestling competitors battling it out.

Mat 2 will be a Submission Grappling tournament under the rules specified by FILA.

The surface for the competitions will be on Olympic Freestyle Mats with covers. The exact weight categories will be posted as soon as there known (As I have forgotten them!)

The organisers are inviting entries for both competitions from clubs operating within Northern Ireland. With this in mind, the Freestyle and Submission Tournament will be, as much as possible, geared toward Novice Competitors within these clubs. This is an attempt to help both sports grow at grass roots level and at the same time providing the participating competitors with some invaluable competition experience.

So we would ask all club instructors, from various backgounds, to encourage their novice trainers to enter and they will be looked after and matched against other novice competitors in a safe but competitive environment.

On a side note - For those interested, if there is enough interest generated for a competition for ‘more experienced’ grapplers, then provisions will be made for this competition to round the day off.

Any questions, please feel free to post them and I will try to answer them or find out the answers to questions that i dont know

Theres going to be an actual straight up wrestling comp? Interesting. We could do with more of these.

While I'd hardly call them regular, there are a good few freestlye tournaments down south.

Marty who is running the FILA comp? Will there be FILA refs?

    Dlofnep,

The rebirth of Wrestling in N.I is relatively new (approx 1 year now) and an northern ireland 'open' competition was run earlier in the year where some of the entries where recieved from various parts of ireland and the uk. A successful reintroduction of the sport to the north.

We most definately are all one..but this is an attempt to help the sports to gain momentum and provide competition to local novices as stated. Nothing more!

    Barry/roper,

the organisers of the wrestling comp are running the Sub grappling under the Fila banner. The 'in's and out's' of it, i'd need to check with the organisers themselves. As i stated im the messenger but what i can tell u is a similar comp was run in carrickfergus (n.i Open) a while back with Freestyle and grappling running side by side. Offical Fila refs officiated as far as im aware..im assuming that the same refs will be used again..but this is an assumption by urs truly and something that would need to be verified...

Marty - I take it this is a continuation of the Sub grappling event in april?

    Some choice matches:

Ciaran Toal vs Waqar Ahmed (epic match)

    Aiden Marron vs Gareth Loye

    Sebastien Torres vs Mark Curry

What's with the "novice" thing though? The last one had a pretty decent standard.

That first match was excellent especially the Chonanesque flying kneebar attempt.

The more the merrier! I think over this side of the pond has always been lacking in wrestling. With more competition comes better wrestling. Fair play to you.

Didnt we have a wrestler who finished 4th in the Olympics in 56? If that was now he would have medalled. It should be thought in secondary schools, I would have loved to have done some freestyle or Graeco-Roman.

    Dasmosse,

It is indeed a similar competition to the one organised in april..infact i cannot believe it was that long ago! I attended the last one and it was a great day with some good skills on show.

Again im only the messenger, the theme for the competition is 'the ni closed'..which will be an attempt to help provide vital competition to the new comers within wrestling/sub wrestling. Now, the competitons where primarilary freestyle wrestling comps but sub wrestling is gathering momentum at a local level and has now been offered a mat for a second time at this freestyle comp. so that the two can run side by side once again. After all, the two sports are very closely relatedin some ways..

So in keeping with the theme of the N.i closed and what has just been explained in this post and previous posts...this will be a chance for novice competitors, in an area with little grappling exp, to get a taste for sub grappling and maybe even win a trophy. Hense building interest, lighting a competitive spirit in some people and raising the profile of sub grappling in our area which has a huge amount of judo, trad jiu jitsu etc.. An attempt to 'get the ball rolling' if u will..

As i said, a more experienced category can be put together at a later date..but with the comp thats being held in belfast only a few weeks later..'the big guns' will get there chance soon enough..:D

Weight cats - as far as im aware the following are the offical FILA Weight Categories...

    Open
    -92kg
    -80kg
    -70kg

Again, this is a great opp for novices to gain exp and be guarded against more expe competitors and have a fun day out.

Any queires please PM me and i'll do my best to find out the answers. ;)
