Work and welfare because of rain?

Hi, I heard a friend saying he had been in with a big contractor who mentioned that if guys are rained off work at the moment, that this contractor doesn’t pay them for their time he just says there is no work that day. He claims the unions have been in and that it is all above board. He also mentioned that some of the lads are working a certain number of hours during the week and signing on. Is this really legal?

How many hours can someone work during the week and still sign on?

If lads are rained off and can't work, can the boss say there is no work and not pay them and if so if there a maximum number of days where this can happen.

Really interested in whether you can get social welfare to supplement the days you can't work. Has anyone heard of this?

They can sign on casually if they are out of work at least three days a week Mon to Sat.
The employer specifies the days worked on a docket and this is signed and returned to the dole office.

It's a touch more complicated than that.

It's 3 days in any six day period, not counting Sunday. If in doubt, sign on and let the exchange sort it out.

Yes its legal above board and basicaly what has been stated possible for working 3 days for the week

Its a crap solution that hasnt been seen that much the last few years with the building boom
I Thought that it was scrapped with the good old days but obviosly it still exists

With the slump cutting costs the contractors dont want to pay for the lads doing nothing

Much the same as the good old bad days
