YO, in TCD Dental School students between the 2nd and 5th yr perform treatments and as far as I know in UCC it is students between the 3rd and 5th though it may even just be 4th and 5th yrs. Generally if it is a filling it may be a student at the more junior end of the clinical yrs, i.e. a 2nd/3rd yr student.

In TCD there can be upto 2 Dentists supervising at any time as well as a couple of nurses, everything is checked at each stage...and most of the time the student has done the procedure on at least one patient and probably about 50 times on a phantom head.

Remember, a student will always be trying their hardest to do the best job for you, if they mess up they hear about it, a qualified Dentist does'nt, and there ain't no money in it for us...
I think you would be making the right decision in going to a Student Dentist.

    Hey,

I had years of dental work done in ucc dental school.
The most of it was done by consultants but i did recently go back for a root canal to be done by a student.
The students are lovely and they may take a little longer than a private qualified dentist but they are probably more thorough and all the work is overseen by staff there.

Don't hesitate to go there I have had nothing but great (as great as going to the dentist can be :) ) experiences there.
And it is so much cheaper!

    Best of luck!

Cool. I've been struggling to pay for my dental treatment for years. I'm 100% sure I have the worst teeth of any 23 year old in the land. How do I go about booking myself in? DO I need a referral from someone or can I just ring up?!?
I have a feeling the student is going to look at my mouth......... and swifty become a college dropout.

You will be waiting longer than a normal dentist and it will take longer, but its cheaper and the students will do their absolute best to do well. Few slackers exist in student dentists.

Oh that's cool, I can wait! Anyone know where I can get a price list for one of the Dublin ones? I've been looking at http://web1.dental.tcd.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=4&Itemid=519 the Trinity one, and can't find prices. Just need that to see allt he different things they do! Oh, this is like shopping!!

Don't think they publish prices on the website but depending on the treatment and who does it they would price you when you get there. And as far as shopping, i.e. getting treatments that you think you want/need may not be whats advised to you. i.e., you may want an implant but you may not be the right candidate.
The prices have 3 variants generally. There is the UG (Undergraduate), NCHD (Non-Consultant Hospital Dentist/JHO/SHO) & Consultant prices. These obviously get more expensive as you deal with someone who has more training.
If you manage to get screened and forwarded to a 2nd year student, everything will be free of charge but this will mean multiple appointments in the middle of the day and your treatments will be limited to Basic Restorative(Fillings), Periodontal Therapy(Scaling, Debridement & Polishing) as well as Hygiene & Oral Health Advice.
Otherwise it will be a 3rd, 4th or 5th year and you will have to pay for the treatment.

    Hope that helps!
