    Hi All,

I'm looking to start doing self defence in Galway.
My main question is what is a good art to do for a beginner?

I'm not really interested in compeditive fighting at the mo just fitness.

Was thinking I'd like to do TKD.
Would this ba a good sport to get into?

Thanks in advance for all your input on this.

All martial arts should be accessible to a beginner, and indeed really they are as beginners are schools bread and butter.

If you're interested in fitness than a competitive martial art will deliver tons more fitness benefits than a display art.

TKD can vary wildly between schools and organisations in terms of style, fighting, rules, etc. I know Mark Leonard used to coach TKD in NUI Galway, maybe he'll pop on here and help you.

    Hi Neosmaster,

you could do worse than check out my place in Parkmore, we run beginners classes all the time and cover all three ranges of combat, Striking, Clinch and Ground.
I have sent you a pm with my number and email if you want to talk some offline about this.
If its Taekwondo specifically you are looking for I can point you in the right direction there too.

I'm moving to Galway in a few months and will be looking for a martial arts club to join. I used to do KickBoxing but i hurt my back a few years ago have became very lazy and put on a fair bit of weight. i'd be looking for a club where i could start from scratch and lose weight at the same time.

    Any suggestions?

Also, is there Krav Maga courses being run in Galway?

    Any info is much appreciated

Pete Foley runs black dragon out in Ballybanne near enough to McDonaghs, he offers one to one training or beginners kickboxing classes which will improve your fitness too. I go to Point Blank Submissions in Parkmore run by Mark Leonard and they're all a great bunch of guys out there, we do MMA, BJJ and stand up also, that beginner class is good for fitness.
If you have any questions regarding either gym, pm me or post below.

I can't really comment on Krav Maga because it would be a bit of a biased view I suppose but from what i seen, it is a short course for self defence, It wouldn't be ideal for fitness but as with everything, I'm sure there are exceptions with Krav Maga clubs etc etc..

    Hope that helps a bit,

    Darragh

Cheers mate, that's a big help. I might check out both clubs when i get over.

The Krav Maga is for my girlfriend more than for me. She wants to do some self defense course and it was recommended.

BJJ is no harder than judo to get stuck into. BJJ is fine for beginners. You'll train with similar skill levels when you first join, and gradually roll with more experienced people.

Judo has a very steep learning curve, although thats not to say its not for beginners.

    BJJ is excellent for beginners.
