Specifically Dublin I suppose.Looking to do the cinema experience but just not bothered about any movies at the moment, would be kind of cool to check out some old/classic movies from 50s up to 90s I guess.

    Any suggestions would be great

    IFI is your best bet.

Does nt the cinema in Smithfield do something like this, or is it not open yet?

Its a good idea, I saw Casablanca for the first time in a cinema in canada that showed kind of cult following films. Its way better on the big screen. They also had kung fu fridays where they would show badly dubbed kung fu films where everything had a sound effect.

I really wish there was somewhere that showed cult and classic films all the time in Dublin. The IFI and Cineworld have the odd thing each month but it's not enough. I get depressed looking at all the garbage showing at the moment.

Could someone approach the Screen or something to do it?I'm sure they would appreciate stuff like that. They get the odd indie movie in there.Maybe there are pressures from film exec-types or somethin to be only showing latest movies.God only knows.Anyone work in cinemas that would have knowledge on this?

Cinemas specialising in playing older and cult films are a pretty common occurrence in the states.

Never understood why this city is so badly served.

Sounds a bit sad but it was always a bit of a dream of mine to take the old classic cinema on Harolds Cross and reopen it showing stuff like that (:o)

Of coursed its been levelled to build a Lidls now:rolleyes:

Still wouldnt mind trying something like that someday though.....If anyone wants to nab my idea be my guest...the sooner there is somewhere to see older films the better:D

Im not sure it would be as implausible as it first appears either. Just look at the classic movie nights in cineworld...always packed and people come from far and wide (is once a month enough though?). Same story in the IFI. My most memorable expereinces in the cinema have been seeing older films or special screenings (scarface in cinemworld and grindhouse and then lawrence of Arabia in IFI, that was spectacular). Thing about it is you know most of the audience is there because they have a genuine love for the films so you tend to get a very special atmosphere at such screenings.

The major mistake cineworld are making is to not repeat show their monthly classic over a number of nights in order to reap the benefit of word-of-mouth. The number of times I've told people I saw "X" last night only to be told "oh I want to see that, I'll go tonight" ..... before I have to burst their bubble is quite a few.

Well Dara cinema in Naas is lying dormant afaik. Lovely Art Deco building in the middle of the town. However Naas might be a bit of a trek for most. Get your mits on it before Aldi does!

My grandad used to run the cinema in Dun Laoghaire, thinks its some good 'ol apartments now

    :(

There's a fantastic book out at the moment that looks at all the old cinema's of Dublin. Amazing to see these unique looking cinema's with queue's going halfway down the street and around corners outside.

Going to the cinema now really is a soulless business:(
