    Hey,

I emailed this to the White House...reckon it'll get a reply, or a read for that matter?

    "Dear Sirs,

Could you please explain to me why the United States of America supported
Kosovo's independence but disagree with the Russian Federation's acknowledgement
of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia?

A reply would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for your time,

    Yours faithfully,

    Stephen
    "

Aren't you lucky that Chrisopher Hitchen wrote a reply in advance.

Btw, you're probably now on a terrorist watch list.

But most of those points are in relation to Russian foreign policy and not the merits of the South Ossetian or Georgian cases.....

You will probably get a standard response regarding US policy. Thats what I usually get from US govt officials. And I wouldn’t worry much… that’s nothing compared to the vile letters GWB gets on a daily basis. But then again, just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.

indeed and how come Russia is in favour of Abkhazia and South Ossetia but not in favour of independance for Chechnya?

Actually Chechnya used to be way closer to its independence recognised by Russia (after Khasavyurt Agreements) then Abkhazia and South Ossetia. If things go well within Ichkeria after 1996 during its de facto independence there was a good chance the status be officially confirmed after 2001. It is only down to inability of the Maskhadov's government to control the country and the criminal nature that government that made it impossible and led to the Second Chechen War.
