Career with online poker company

    Folks

Im thinking of applying for an IT related role with an online poker company 'pocket kings' in south Dublin. I've been playing poker for the past couple of years, nearly exclusively online, apparently a knowledge of poker especially online is a distinct advantage.

I already have a decent job with another IT company but am a bit fed up of working in the financial services industry. i may be completly wrong but surely online poker has got to be more interesting /challenging then what im currently at?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this company, what they're like to work for etc?
I'm also a little worried (although i doubt it)that being involved with an online poker company might make me loose interst in playing recreationally outside of work.

If anyone has any thoughts id appreciate it.
    Cheers

They are the company that makes the software for Full Tilt AFAIK.

Great company to work for I have heard.

    I've heard mixed reports.

That there's relatively good benefits, compensation, facilities, but in some departments that the working atmosphere is pretty awful.

Apparently they hire and fire without much hesitation.

Not that you will necessarily have that experience, but that's the feedback I'm aware of...

I think I remember Kinscem telling me he was an accountant many years ago, in the merrion.

I think I remember Kinscem telling me he was an accountant many years ago, in the merrion.

I believe this to be true but I also remember that he's been early retired for the last year and a half and hence his post was made somewhat tongue in cheek I would imagine. Plus there was more then a grain of truth in what he said. ;)

As for the OP a number of the posters on the boards poker forum work for FT so I'm sure one or two of them could pm you about the reality of the job but on the other hand some of them would probably be interviewing you so perhaps not

One thing to bear in mind is the future potential of the online poker industry in terms of furthering your career. Personally I'd prefer to work for an online firm that had more then just poker going on as it would give you wider internal opportunities and would also look better on a CV in the long run as you could emphasize different areas of experience in the future if needed when/if online poker declines. But then again you sound like you are looking for something involving mainly coding so perhaps thats not relevant to you.

I recently started working with them. Great so far. Lots of perks. Travel money, money to do things outside work like gym membership, karting, skydiving or whatever. Lots of free food - breakfast, lunch, chocolate, snacks, crisps, innocent smoothies galore and silk bagged tea.

Although they are poker oriented the jobs are still not too different from other places. A software bug is a software bug no matter what the software is meant to do. They do have tournies every second week which is nice.

They do do lots of hiring, haven't been fired yet but will keep you posted :P

You must be kidding, they don't have bugs!!! surely not....

I would love a job in there support department, it really seems as they do nothing and I mean nothing.

    rant over.

P.S. if you can set-up a increase on my win ratio, I would appreciate it.

It seems a few boardsies remember me, which is nice.

What really made a difference to me in a job was having a good boss, the sort that trusts you. In the last ten years before I retired at the end of 2006 I didn't have that, but for five years before that I worked for a real gent.

Try to find out what is the culture in the new employer through word of mouth.

You may be a construction worker working on a home,
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome,
You might own guns and you might even own tanks,
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks.
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Anyway, I haven't played live poker since last December, so I 'm thinking of heading into the Fitz for the end of month tomorrow night (if there is still a Fitz). Its five years exactly since my one win in the EOM. :o

They should hire a few new pigeons for their customer service department to speed up their replies imo.

A friend works for Paddypower in a IT support role.

And he said that to work in IT role for PP you cannot have any PP account

Meaning he had to close all his accounts.

Does this extend onto other Ipoker poker sites aswell ?

Im almost 100% sure this applies to every job in this industry. It does in Paddy Power, it does for the gaming company I work for, and any other ones I've heard of.

Think about it logically, why would they allow you to keep your account?

As for iPoker, im not sure, but you may be able to keep your account on another skin, such as GJP. Would need to check with the employer really.

Pocket Kings are a great company to work for, if you're good at what you do.

    Otherwise...

Did they require a 4data modem?

From what I heard they are very detailed in their approach to hiring, and often require >5 interview processes.
I'm sure that they would need to be good to work for after all that, otherwise I doubt anyone would be bothered.
