Firewire PCI card - Can't get my head around it.

Hi all. I don't know really where I should post this but anyway.

I just bought a Firewire PCI Card. I bought it to connect my mini DV camcorder so that I can edit videos on my laptop.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1525 and I asked the man serving me in the shop if this would definitely work with my laptop and he said yes. I made sure to tell him exactly what type of computer I had.

I've been trying to get my head around this for the past half an hour or so and I'm starting to think that it's not working and isn't compatible with laptops.

Could anybody shed some light if I'm doing anything wrong or should I just return it?

    All help is much appreciated.

You are looking for a PC card (formerly known as PCMCIA), not a PCI card. It's flat, slightly larger than a credit card, with loads of holes on one end (that goes into the laptop) and the actual firewire port on the other.

Actually, check what type of cards the laptop takes. It may in fact be one of these ExpressCard slots. In that case, a PC card is no good to you.

The Inspiron 1525 has a ExpressCard/54 expansion slot.

Expresscards come in 34mm and 54mm formats and you can fit a 34mm one into a 54mm slot. Just search for "expresscard firewire" on ebay.

You should get one for about 15 - 20 Euro inc postage to Ireland.
