Hey, I'm going into 2nd year, and I saw an elective with a stage one course code 100-something-something...

As long as I assign that to stage 2, am I ok to take it?

Can't take the stage 2 one, 200-something-something cos I didn't do the prerequisite stage one module last year...

Totally confuzzled here - thanks for any help!

Don't assign it to a stage. Not sure why, but I remember reading not to. I never have and I've never had a problem with signing up for Stage 1 electives.
