Now freesat has been up and running for a period of time, where (In the north) is the best place to buy a freesat box? Whats the rough cost of one and are they good value for money?

I picked one up in Currys in Belfast. Argos also stock them, but I couldn't find any in there Newry store.

You'll often find them on eBay but be careful you are not getting the "freesat from sky" version which is different to the BBC/ITV Freesat one.

The boxes I got were the bog standard SD ones, and cost me STG£59

This is probably a stupid question but do they work in the rep of Ireland i.e. Dublin?? :o

I don’t have satellite or cable just the good old fashioned terrestrial/ Arial telly, so if I purchased the BBC/ITV Freesat one is it just a matter of plugging it in and off I go!?

That link doesn't appear to be working? But my question is, can we expect to see these boxes appearing in Argos Stores in the south soon?

I cannot imagine BBC/ITV changing the boxes to accept a ROI postcode. Strictly speaking FREESAT was intended for BBC licence payers that cannot receive digital terrestrial so I would have assumed that there would be legal impediments for selling in ROI. Maybe I am wrong on that.

But as Irishhomer has said they are in Tullamore. I gotta check that out and see if they have the Humax Foxsat HD !!

You can pre-order stuff online with Argos.co.uk for collection in their Newry store.

By the way - is there a "magic eye" equivalent for Freesat boxes (any brand) ?

Not presently. No RF out function at all.

If you are going to try buying in Argos Newry be sure to get your story right. My father in law was refused because he didn't give a NI address. Also I think his Southern credit card might have been a problem. The assistant also assured him that Freesat was blocked by RTE in the south :) so he would be wasting his money anyway.

Did she/he also mention the "Freesat detector vans" driving around?

I was in London last week for work and picked up a Foxsat in Argos - but they really made it difficult for me! They wanted a UK Postcode even though I said that I didn't have one...

I finally managed to pay at one of their automated credit card terminals - after a couple of invalid post code attempts it lets you purchase but puts a note on the receipt to get the counter service person to get you to fill out a TV Licence form!

Anyway, I had a copy of the Radio Times in my hand and simply filled out the address and post code of Channel 5's Customer Service office... :D

I'm very happy with the box :D

If I'm not mistaken EU rules on cross border shopping means it's technically illegal for them to refuse sale. At least that's what I believe.

yesterday i bought a humax in an argos in the uk
i had cash, so as not the raise suspicion but i nearly came unstuck when they asked for a postcode. luckily my son lives in london, so i was able to supply that. not before the manager was called over. seems that they inform the tv licence people, so a valid address is required.
anyway, it is still sitting in a box at home, so no idea what the quality is like. the box is tiny.

Thanks guys. Didnt realize about the postcode thingy. Its good to see a working currys website (.co.uk) and the argos uk site has EVERYTHING listed!

Whats the story in this country and websites of big stores. None seem to work or are complete, the currys.ie has been under construction for years! They must loose loads of business from not having a working website.

I bought mine in Argos in Newry. My Laser card woulnd't work in the chip reader, but they had no problem with swiping it and I had to sign  with a pen, it was terrible:D.

I was asked for a post code by the assistant and I told him I didn't have one since I was from the south, to which he replied no problem I just have to ask NI residents for a Post code for TV Licensing purposes.

They can't refuse to sell you one because your from the south it against EU law.

I bought my Humax last weekend in Currys in Newry. Loads of Humax and Grundig in stock. No problem on postcode. Girl asked for one, I said we didn't have one, she typed something into the register and then my credit card worked ok. I also got a free plastic bag:D
For setting up I used the Ikea Belfast postcode:cool:
Reception is excellent, on channels that were a bit "blocky" on my Echostar FTA box there is a perfect picture.
