'K, I've been confused for a long time and now I think I want to do a degree in Arts at UCC.

Greek and Roman Civilisation, Latin, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation.

Then after first year I want to branch off into Archaeology and Latin.

I was just wondering what the course comprises of, and do any of you study Archaelogy/Latin, etc.

Are the career opportunities fantastic or poor?

If anyone could talk to me about this would be great!

    Thanksss.

Well if its any help, my mom did Ancient Greek and Latin in college, and ended up working a well paid job sourcing products for apple in Cupertino, so at the end of the day, what you do in college isnt the be all and end all of everything...

If you really want to do teaching I would advise you take a second subject like geography or history, improves your chances of getting work.

I would have liked to do Irish & Psychology in 1st year (along with English and Maths) but there is a timetable clash and I can't do both so I have to chose another subject. I want to do Irish because I want to teach so I'm thinking of taking philosophy. Can anyone tell me the level of difficulty/work load etc. I'm looking for a not too difficult one cause I'll have a heavy work load with the other three. Any ideas?? Unfortunately the other ones I would have chosen also clash with Irish!

With Philosophy, in first year anyway, the work loads not too heavy, the thing is to go to all the lectures and tutorials. Theres not a huge amount in it you just really need to understand the concepts. Theres two non-compulsery essays(they were 2yrs ago anyway)
definately do these as they prepare you for the essay based exam, and theres two class tests which are esay enough if you've been to lectures.

So in other words, if you think you'l pick up the concepts easily enough(you know yourself) there wouldnt be alot of work in it.

The workload in Philosophy in first year isn't too heavy, there's a fair bit of reading but if you are interested in Philosophy it's all fairly interesting stuff. The workload gets a lot heavier in second and third year.

Hey, new here, just wondering if anyone could pass on some advice for Arts. I want to be a secondary school teacher, and my initial choices for the first year were going to be English, Religions and Global Diversity, History and Economics (Would've taken English and R&GD to the higher levels..) Timetable clashes mean I can't do this, as three of the four are in Group 5. So now I'm stuck for what to pick. English and History are my two favourite subjects, and the ones I was intending on teaching when I first set my sights on it. I've been told by more people than I can count that I won't get a job if I take those two subjects as my ones to carry into years two and three but there's really nothing else I want to do now.. This brings me to the next thing, which is the remaining two to pick for the first year, because I want something that I won't hate and that I can have to teach up to JC level. I'm thinking that I might take Greek and Roman Civilisations and Geography, but I didn't do Geography up to LC so I dunno if I'd be shooting myself in the foot going back into it (All the stuff I learned for JC is loooooong since forgotten).

Basically - English, History, Geography, Greek & Roman Civilisation.

Good four, or bad four? And what's the liklihood of me being able to get a teaching job out of that lot?

Also, I'm missing the first day back (22nd September) because I won't be back from holidays until that night, will that be a big deal or will I be alright to miss the first lectures?

    Cheers from a n00b

    I'm thinking
Art History, English, Geograhy and philosophy.

However My mother is freaking saying I won't get a job for teaching with those and says I should take psychology instead of Art History  which is insane, seen as art history is an actual leaving cert subject!

You can't teach Psychology, there's no point changing for that reason.
What do you want to teach?

No it won't be at all as long as you've an interest in it.

They're a grand four I think. You're pretty employable with them.
I did G&R and it was grand. They tell you what'll be in the exams.

Is that a registration day for you? If so, maybe you shouldn't miss it...
    Not sure.

No, its not. Online registration just went through now. Orientation and registration part 2 are on the 15th of September.. I changed my mind about Geography, because I looked over stuff and realised I still abhor it as much as I did back at JC level.. Going with English, History, Greek and Roman Civ and Archaeology.. if I hate G&R Civ or Archaeology enough I might swap back to Geo if I can.. I dunno!

Archaeology is not that difficult a subject and with arts it all depends on what you want to do in your masters or if you want to do the HDip. My mate graduated with a BAmajor in philosophy and did a masters in computer programming so go figure.

Archaeology is dependant on the the time frame you graduate. It was great for general archaeology two years/three years ago with all the road schemes..now most have no jobs from what I've encountered. But it means there's room for specialising.

Anyway don't get too bogged down with arts. YOu'll see what I mean when you start into it but yeah archaeology is grand and your first year is the basics from the palaeolithic to medieval society i think.

I think you mean "4>Politics" not Philosophy.
You know things are bad when Mickey-Manslaughter is correcting Johnny-Fatality's college choices... aswell as kicking his butt in English! :P

Have picked : English, Philosophy, Politics, European Studies (Geography and Sociology as number 5 and 6)

Once I get English it really doesn't matter to be honest

Thanks Alan just checked and got my first three but not my fourth, Comp Sc., got Archaeology instead, not too happy about that, thought Comp Sc. wouldn't be hugely in demand.

We must be in the Boole at 8.30 tomorrow morning

No you have 16 hours a week.

It seems there are only 3 politics on it though which is confusing:confused:

I suppose I'll find out Monday morning.

I know I have lectures everyday on the main timetable but I'm talking about the "Initial First Year Lecture Schedule" thingy that came in the post, where there is a long list of subjects and a date, time and location given for each initial lecture. Well, all mine are on Monday?

you have 4 Politics lectures per week according to the main timetable I have:
    Initial Lecture Wed 24th @ 2
    then
    Mon @ 11
    Tues @ 9
    Wed @ 2
    Thurs @ 9

Check the stuff you got in the post

Yes but the Tuesday is missing on the online one for some reason and therefore I don't know which room it is in.

I just wanted to add in here that because all teachers now have to register with the Teaching Council, it is no longer acceptable to teach the subjects you did in First year up to JC level. That's the official line. Some schools will go against it. Just so you know.
