My laptop screen has suddently started flickering madly and has white horizontal lines going through the scene. It acts like its possessed for a few minutes and then reverts to normal. At least until it decided to throw a fit again?

Can anybody tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

any clue at all whats triggering it? Is it when you jiggle the laptop? Play a video? Change the brightness? The last time I saw a device go haywire like you describe it was my Nokia 3650 after it took a trip in the washing machine. And survived!

Out of interest what graphics card do you have on the laptop.

Could be your laptop Inverter. Inverters are sensitive to vibration especially when nearing it's end of life, try tapping the bottom edge of your screen and see if that induce any flickering.

My laptop used to do that after I opened the lid. Fixed it by re-installing graphic card drivers

this happened my 2 month old Dell XPS m1530. A few days later the screen went totally dead.

Had to be replaced by a dell tech. Im very happy with the dell support i got. I logged the problem on friday evening and the guy was there monday morning and fixed it in 30 minutes.

It does sound like a hardware problem, but if you have your resolution and refresh rate set to high this can also happen. Since you said it comes and goes though, I would be inclined to believe it is a hardware problem.

Just to be on the safe side, now would be a good time to back up your files...
