I'm hoping to run my first marathon next year, but as I've never ran a marathon how do I fulfill the qualifying standard requirement? Any help gratefully received ;)

Most marathons do not have qualification standards or requirements (except a credit card to pay the entry fee!) AFAIK, you simply sign up for Edinbugh in September and get the training done. Tell us a bit more about the kind of running you have done to date and we can advise you (if that's what you want of course).

Very few marathons have entry criteria - London, Boston and (possibly) New York are the only ones I can think of and you normally qualify through either raising money for charity or running a different marathon in a fast time.

Edinburgh has no restrictions, it's 11,500 first come first served, all you need is the entry fee! See here for the details

....by paying the registration fee! Very few marathons have qualifying standards. Anyone wanting to enter Boston has to qualify for example. Very sure Edinburgh doesn't have one - but website actually is vague.

Some posters here have run it previously though....

If I remember correctly from this year, Edinburgh do offer a qualifying time. When entries first opened, they had a ballot system for UK residents. I'm pretty sure all overseas entries got automatic entry outside the ballot.
A sub 3hr marathon exempted you from the ballot and gave you guaranteed entry regardless of address. Having said that, I'm pretty sure, everyone who applied last year got in. So the only benefit of having the qualifying time was that the entry fee for that category was something like £5 cheaper.

Thanks a million everyone who replied. I don't think I'll be fit enough for this years Dublin marathon so I'm hoping to walk it, hopefully I'll run the Edinburgh one :)

Got an email this morning from Edinburgh Marathon. They have dropped all pretence of a ballot/qualifying for next year. First come first served and entries opened yesterday. Again sponsored by Albert Bartlett so you will get a free bag of spuds again at registration!!

Entries for the 2009 Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon
Entries for the 2009 Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon are now open. We have removed the ballot entry system. Entries will be on a first come, first served basis. Entries will close when we reach 11,500 entries or 15th January 2009, whichever is soonest. You will need to use your unique entry code copied below to receive a guaranteed entry. If you are not ready to sign up now you can still receive a guaranteed entry by signing up for a charity by 8th May 2008.

    2009 route
The 2009 route will follow the same route as the 2008 marathon. The Albert Bartlett Edinburgh Marathon was rated the fastest marathon in the UK by Runners World magazine. The course has an overall elevation drop of over 50m that should make it a good course for those looking for a good time or a personal best.
