External Hard Drive

I've got a Sony Vaio laptop and I'm thinking of getting an external hard drive as 80GB is just a bit small.

Never seen these drives used before, could someone tell me does it function in the same way as a normal hard drive once connected?
i.e. can I just plug it in and say watch a avi file or play music without having to transfer it back to my laptop?
Is USB 2.0 fast enough to transfer enough data for a movie also to watch it straight from laptop.

On a budget of about €65 for 160GB, any recommendations?
Was thinking of this Philips or this Transcend 250GB for €90 although if it's not gonna last 6/7 years I'd probably just go for a smaller one.

    Thanks
    Keith

Yeah, you just connect up the usb cable and you can watch the films straight from the hard drive without having to copy them over.

Cheers guys. I splashed out a little more cash and went for this WD 320 GB for €107 incl. delivery. Great value and it's got firewire 400 too.
