To crop or not to crop - Sports photo C&C

    Hi there,

I've recently took the plunge and went for a DSLR for action photos and stuff. I read PaulW's advice and tried to use it. Here's the result. Any comments are appreciated. As i point out in the header, my head tells me I should crop tight but my feeling tells me the empty space to the left gives the photo some sense of, I don't know, direction?

    Crop, for 2 reasons.

    1. Dead space.
    2. He is playing rugby, not soccer.

I am one of these people who like the "space" but I'd still crop a little of the right and a little of the left, you'll still have plnety of "space" left for the way you wanted it.
Great expression on the guy you'd know he was a Rugby player even if you couldn't see the ball or protective cap.
A faster shutter speed would have had the ball perfect too.

I agree with Shiny here, theres an awful lot of dead space on the left, which wouldnt be a bad thing if there was something of interest in this background space (goal posts or other players) which would add to the story. But theres nothing interesting in this space.

The tighter crop of the player would be better i think.

Thanks guys. I agree with the comments about the wasted space, just part of me refused to acknowledge.

Re the shutter speed. I hardly had time to turn on the camera before I saw him charging in my direction so I'm glad a photo at all!

Kinda of like the shot but i'd only crop the right hand side such that you move your subject further off center than he already is. I think a really tight crop would be good if you were doing the picture editor thing but if you are hoping for a portrait that someone might hang on a wall then i'd leave the vacant space on the left (maybe a little crop on the left) and crop to the right. His pose naturally looks to the left of the shot so you can give it some context and perspective (and nice contrast of colour) keeping the vacant space at the left. But then again i'm more of a portrait guy than a sports head ;)
