external hdd with ethernet and the xbox360

I recently picked up an xbox360 and have been messing around with the networking features, playing songs and videos from my laptop on my TV etc. - it's quite a handy feature and far easier than trying to have a wired connection between laptop and TV.

Anyway - it got me thinking that an external HDD hooked up to the network independently would be an even better scenario as it would mean my laptop wouldn't have to be switched on when I wanted to watch a film or listen to music through the TV... the thinking is any content I download I can transfer to the networked HDD and then watch it on the Xbox whenever I want.

So firstly, are you going to be spending a lot more to get an external HDD that has ethernet on it (or wifi built into it) and if so is there an alternative, like a wireless modem which allows for USB connections (Which would be handy for networking my printer wirelessly too, by the way).

Secondly, will a networked hdd work with my xbox or does it have to be an actual computer in order for the two to communicate properly? Has anyone had any experience with this kind of connection?

    Thanks,.

Sounds a bit too complicated to me. If I were you I'd get a large HDD and copy all your media to it form your laptop then keep it up to date every week.

Make a nice place to keep it beside 360 and plug in via USB then you can just watch/listen to media as you wish via media remote control or joypad.

Sounds like the best solution to me, that's what I'm gonna do anyway and reconnect my tv to sound system for added oomph!

Wouldn't say it's complicated assuming the 360 can see the HDD - once it can it's straight forward enough.

That said it might be an idea for me to find a HDD with an ethernet cable and USB cable - that way I can network the drive and still have it connected directly to the 360 if it can't find it through the network itself... the advantage would be that I could update files whenever I wanted without having to mess around with disconnecting wires, moving things around and all of that.
