Just out of curiosity, i was wondering if this band has a big following in Ireland. I think they're definately one of the best bands around at the moment (though the lyrics can sometimes be questionable) and they seem to be breaking into the big time, but i never really hear of many people liking anything other than "evil" and "slow hands"..

    Any ideas?

A fair few of my mates back home would be into them. I'm really glad they haven't become 'cool' yet though.

    Fantastic band live too.

Always on the radio, playing bigger venues (I like intimate gigs), tickets harder to get. A number of reasons really.

Ye they're pretty popular alright. They've had sellout gigs and main billings. Plus their latest album 'Our Love To Admire' went straight to no 1 in the charts:eek:

They're a brilliant live band even though their set is a bit predictable. Lyrics are def questionable alright!

One of my fav bands, cant wait for the next album whenever it comes out.....

Im a huge fan. Id say myself and most of my mates would place them in our top 5 favourite bands of all time. Big group of us went over To Alexandra Palace to see them in London last year on a Friday then flew back here and saw them in the RDS on the Sunday.

I find not listening to the radio always helped.

and have yet not to be able to get a ticket for any very "cool" band's gig I've ever wanted to see..

the last time I asked someone the question they said they didn't want other people to like the same band as them :confused:

Love them! Definitely one of my favourite bands.

Interpol and the national are my two favourite bands.

Saw interpol live in July and they were amazing, there set list appeals to all the hardcore fans as they don't always seem to play their mainstream songs such as The Heinrich maneuver.

Great band, really enjoying Our Love To Admire but songs such as Say Hello to the angels cant be beaten.

I didn't say I listen to the radio. I would just hate them to become part of the playlist that Spin or the likes have on repeat.

Did you not try see Interpol the last time they played on their own in Dublin? Tickets sold out in minutes apparently. I missed out on tickets for their gig a few years back. That's how big they were while still relatively unknown to the masses. If they got any bigger then naturally tickets would become more scarce.

Nah that'd just be music snobbery ;)

I would say Interpol are one of my favourite bands of the last 5 years. Absolutely superb live too. Realy atmospheric and note perfect.

Our Love To Admire is probably my favourite album (marginally). I was in the States last year and it was the only cd we we had on a road trip and listened to it about 11 times back to back. Still haven't got sick of it either. Brilliant.

Don't you mean "popular"? Doesn't popularity instantly mean uncool? I'm all confuddled...

Yeah Interpol are class. They've got a post punk, new wave, Berlin era Bowie thing going on which just cannot be a bad thing... :)

I still love their first album, one of my favourites of all time. While I think their second and third albums are good and definatly above par compared to other stuff thats out atm they're in a totally different league than the first which is a bit dissapointing. (Only questionable lyrics are in the third album imo)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Agree with the above. 'Turn On The Bright Lights' is one of the best debut albums ever.

Songs like 'The New', 'PDA', 'Obstacle 1', 'Untitled' and 'Stella....' are gonna be timeless classics for me. I do love the other two albums but for all round quality the first one cannot be beat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

    PDA and Roland :)

I used to love them but I feel they've gone consistently downhill since their first album, excluding the two singles from Antics. The vocals just sound so similar to the National and overall, Interpol's material is weaker so when I want to listen to something like that I just lash on Boxer

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34 novocaine1

Think their first album is defo the best. Love 'untitled' and 'PDA'.

what questionable lyrics are you guys talking about??

Just startin to get into them. Really lovin what I've heard so far. Next time I get a chance to see Interpol I'll be on it like a fat guy on a cake

They're pretty deadly - although I'm not a big fan of "Our Love to Admire". I saw them years ago before the first album came out and unfortunately didn't really enjoy it as much as I would now. We did get to hang out with them in Whelans afterwards though. Annoyed with myself now that I didn't pay more attention at the gig. I have a terrible habit of seeing a band for the only time in a really small venue just before I become a big fan -ditto sigur ros.

Ye the National would def fit the bill:D
First time i listened to Interpol i wasnt all that impressed. Same thing with the National. They're both two of my favorite bands now!
Still cant decide which album i like more, Boxer or Turn Off The Bright Lights. Both truly amazing albums.

I missed Interpol to see Aphex twin at a festival too. Glad i did. Overexposure is never a good thing. Would of been my third time seeing them in a year.

Good to see a decent reply, wasn't expecting that

But i'd agree with most of the stuff said, their first album is unreal, in a league of its own as someone said, but there's so many other gems on their other albums - pace is the trick and take you on a cruise and public pervert - to name a few.

They're pretty savage live, see them whenever i can. The only problem is that they dont really interact with the crowd, which is a pity. I snuck into the rds last time they played it, snuck in early tryin to meet them.. pity they had their wives with them, homo's, so i left them be.. which was really disappointing

Hope they're new record is better than the last one, without a song like lighthouse, which i do not like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭Kid V

I hope the new record is better than the last one too. I have no complaints against Lighthouse though. I think its one of the best songs on the album!

Ye Pace Is The Trick and Take You On A Cruise are my favorite songs from the last two albums:D I'd love to see Take You On A Cruise live. It has an amazing climax.

Though, i think interpol are probably going to try and "evolve" so it might go in a different direction, which could be b'dass

To think, i didnt really dig antics at first, i bought the album for slow hands and evil, and then i kind've went off it.. Now i cant stop listening to all of their stuff. Especially some've the stuff on antics

Also just found a song that was on the japanese OLTA, wish they'd included it in our version.

The National are probably the most unappealing and beige band I've ever heard. I find them soul-suckingly dull.

The comparison with Interpol is interesting. Mainly because although Interpol do the broody thing very brilliantly throughout their 3 albums, their albums are laced with some punchy and powerful and sometimes upbeat stuff. I can't say the same thing for the National.

Interpol are excellent though, and although I think TOTBL is their best album, I think that Antics and OLTA ain't half bad either, they're actually very, very good. I'd probably rate the albums: TOTBL 9/10, OLTA and Antics 8/10.

Haha! Fair enough, mate. Although I must say, Tom Woodhead's never given me reason to doubt whether he actually has a heartbeat, unlike Matt Berninger.

And I won't even go into how silly a post that is, that you've made.

Next Exit is absolutely immense, i love that song.
The drum sounds on antics are very cool, it's a solid album, only 2 tracks i don't really love.

It's been two years now and still with the mentions of the unmentionable. Why oh why do reminders have to be constantly given out?
pity they had their wives with them, homo's
    Huh?

And to other posters: this thread is about Interpol so keep it on topic... and civil.

Still with the squabbling over each other's opinions. Christ, people have different opinions - accept it.

I was just wondering what you meant by "pity they had their wives with them, homos". Seems like a rather oxymoronic comment...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭Karma_Police

Has there been mentions of unmentionable though? I'm confused

Its just something i do, and really witty people do, you know, call some1 gay for having a girlfriend and stuff like that. I wish i could be less funny.....

And i presume there's no secret slag in the use of "oxymoronic", ie calling me a moron. If there was, kudos, brilliantly done.

If not, well you should have meant it like that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Yes there has been mention of the unmentionable - you don't see it now though because it has been edited out of posts.

Your speculation is inaccurate. "Oxymoronic" means contradictory - it was merely an innocent question with no agenda. Lose the shoulder chip.

    And back on topic...

    seriously though? what questionable lyrics?......
Interpol would be one of my favorite bands, been a huge fan since TOTBL (even tho the first time i heard em i didn't like them) and a few people have said that the lyrics in some of the songs are bit dodgy, I don't see how....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭red_ice

Heres a little something i whipped up a few months ago. Not much of a singer tbh :pac:

Interpol imo are one of the greatest bands of modern music. Personally i rate Obsticle 1 as the best indie rock song of all time. Its so well rounded and every second of that song has been analyzed and honed to perfection.

Unlike most bands who become popular and get ruined by radio, this will never happen with interpol for me.

I saw them at that Alexandra Palace gig alright, but they were well worn out. It was one of the last dates on the tour, and they were well shook.

In contrast, I saw them close to the start of the tour in the Astoria in London, and my word, was it some gig. Good and small venue.

Regardless, wicked act. Grow better with every album. (Does everyone here think that Turn on the bright lights is there best album or what? I reckon Antics to be honest.)

Mind Over Time is on the Special (possibly Japan) edition of the new album.

Interpol have a very big Irish following. Just go to any of their Irish gigs and you will find that out.

I like Interpol, especially Antics, but it's not hard for a band like them to be 'note perfect' when playing live as their stuff is very straightforward to pay. The guitars and bass especially are mostly simple, relaxed notes/riffs. Great band though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,731 ✭✭✭11811

i'd hardly call it straightforward, yes some of the guitar parts are simple enough but the interaction of them with the four other instruments makes it quite more complex, and i'd hardly call any of Carlos D's bass lines lazy, altho he did admit to his bass playing being much simpler in OLTA as he was focusing on the keys etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Den_M

Regarding the interaction being complex, I dunno, if both guitars play and the bass play what they're supposed to be playing in time then that's all you need. I think the parts are still simple, but this is one of the things I like about the band.

I'm a huge Interpol fan RDS gig last year was probably my best gig all last year. All three albums are absolutely top notch & who gives a **** if one is slightly better than another or whatever holes people want to pick there all great albums in their own right!

And whats with all this 'questionable lyrics' stuff, did i miss something?

Quality band. Lyrics are great cos they can mean something pretty different to the individual. Bassist is fantastic, one of the few out there who actually put a good effort in his part and Paul Banks voice is a more melodic version of Ian Curtis. Bloody savage! Still haven't seen them live though :(
