    Hi all,

I've got a tonne of DVDs clogging up my place that I'm in the process of ripping onto my mac with Handbrake.

I use Front Row to play back most of my media, but I also stream media onto my PS3. I'll be picking up an iphone in near future, so I'd like to be able to stick movies on that too.

Is there a common, catch-all audio/video format & container that can be played back on all three?

5.1 surround sound and DVD quality-resolution would be great, as would subtitle support.

H.264 + AAC audio in an MP4 container.

make sure that you adhere to the AVC profile when encoding.

use ffmpegX - http://www.ffmpegX.com - it can also hardcode subtitles when you need to.

I'm not sure how iPhone will handle higher resolution files - DVD / 720p (PS3 no?) res files may not play well on iPhone which may simply not have the ponies to decode the higher resolutions smoothly. I would encode for iPhone separately - in any event, i believe that iTunes will automatically re-encode video to suit iPhone.

    Thanks for the advice.

I figured that the iPhone may struggle with higher resolution files, but I'm also reluctant to keep 2 versions of every movie. Will the iPhone play back 5.1 surround audio tracks?

i ripped some films using the apple tv seting in handbrake thinking that they would be compatable with the iphone, no luck im afraid, itunes wont allow them to be transfered so ive no idea if they would have worked. so if i ned anything encodeed for the iphone its encoded through the iphone setting in handbrake or reencoded in itunes for the iphone

You could try the Neuros OSD. You can connect an external HDD to it and it converts your videos to iPod/iPhone format in 320x480 resolution and in 640x480 res. It works great for the iPod/iPhone screen and a laptop screen but not great for a TV screen.
