Primary School teaching - Irish language

    Hi all!

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum or not but here is my query...

I am thinking of becoming a primary school teacher. Problem: I didn't do higher level irish for my leaving certificate. I am unable to start higher level irish now as i have forgotten the basis of the language. Therefore I would fail the leaving cert exam if i tried to sit it! Unfortunately i had a terrible teacher in primary school for irish and i struggled throughout secondary school to catch up and i never did...

Does anyone know of any foundation courses in Dublin City that i could do to get me started. I need to start from scratch.

    Thank you:)

    Hi Oniontops
there are courses available from Conradh na Gaeilge and Gaelchultúr in Dublin. You'll also find that most of the grinds centres for Leaving Certs cater for people who want to repeat irish for the h.dip. I would also direct you to the forum on educationposts.ie where there is a forum for qualified, training and non-qualified primary school teachers.... I know that I saw a thread on it today about a group from dublin meeting up to speak irish before the hibernia interviews.

I went back and repeated my irish LC last year and I hadn't done irish in 10 years and am currently enrolled in Hibernia H. Dip course.... each step will get you closer to your goal! Best of luck with the Gaeilge :-) go n'éirí an bothar leat

There are classes in Kilroy college for repeat Irish, and you can do it distance learning. The Institute on Leason ST do classes aswell, but its expensive!

Im also checking out classes as I tried to teach myself the irish course after 7 years of no irish and I got a D1! :(

    DO NOT do this course!!!!

I wasted nearly €400 on this course last year, & it was just that:- a complete waste of money!
They do not give a rats arse about you, & you get absolutely NO support from them.

Please please do not waste your money.

There's a course in crumlin for repeating your Irish, & it's very reasonably priced.

Oniontops:- you most definitely CAN do your LC this year & pass. Trust me!!!
I did it last year, 11 years after doing OL & just about passing it the 1st time round.

I did a course in Navan & walked away this August with a B2. It's terrible to say, but the LC is just a test of how good your memory is.
If you can memorise, then you'll pass.
When you have your honour, then you can concentrate on actually learning Irish!!!

The course changes after this year, so I really would recommend you try it this year. what have you to lose? The poems etc, will be V easy to predict this year, whereas next year anything from the entire syllabus could come up, plus the marking structure is completely changing for 2010, so give it a go this year.

    Go Over to Educationposts.

A few there did the Institute course last year.
    What I gathered was:- it's V expensive.
The teacher wasn't at all approachable.
    The class was very cramped.
It was V easy to get left behind as numbers were so big.
Bombarded with notes, so very hard to decide what's important & what's not.
Lots generally drop out as a result.

BUT:- if you can stick with it you should be ok.
(Again, this is not personal experience, & only going from stuff I remem reading others posting)

My course was much smaller & much cheaper. You got one & one assistance whenever needed, weren't intimidated out of asking questions, etc, & I found it very good.
I think I heard good reports from the course in Crumlin & I think it was only about €300 or under.
