A D40 and a 50mm

As the title suggests I have a D40 and am intending on getting a 50mm f1.8 (don't think the f1.4 is worth the extra €s) this week. I realise that I won't have AF as my camera doesn't have a motor inbuilt, and this lens doesn't have one. I am intending on upgrading to a better camera during our christmas staff sale, hopefully the D300, so the AF issue may only be for a few months.

Do you think it would make using the lens with the D40 a pain? Is AF a necessity when using a lens like this?

    Cheers

I think it is easier to manual focus on some of the older cameras as they had split screen focussing and it was easier to tell than the newer digital cameras when everything is in focus. I had the f1.8 (in canon) and upgraded to the f1.4 and it was worth it in terms of build quality and more accurate focussing.

You could hold off a few days and see are any AF-S primes announced at Photokina.

Or, as borderfox mentioned, you could use a split screen for it. Worst case, the green dot will still work with the non-AFS lenses.

No not at all. It becomes second nature after a very short period of time.

Photokina is not for another month
    ..........can't..........wait............that.........long :)

There is a Sigma 50mm with their AF motor in it, its way too expensive though (nearly €200 more than the Nikkor 50mm f1.4). Even if a new lens was announced I'd say it'd cost more a fair bit more than the non AF versions even with a discount.

I think I'll get one so. Is the f1.4 worth the extra € over the f1.8?
Every comparsion I've read never gave a conclusive Yes/No

If you don't absolutely need the extra 1/3 of a stop, go for the 1.8. If you find it's not working out for you you can always sell it again.

The Sigma got great reviews, I know it more expensive.

Thats pretty much the way a few reviews had it, I'll go for the 1.8
Keep an eye out for my obviously expected 50 C&C soon ;)
    Thanks guys

They are available for the other models, so probably. I haven't looked to be honest.
