I'm looking for advice on buying a good compact camera for the other half. I know very little about cameras so I'd be grateful for any recommendations of any particular models/brands.

She has a Fujifilm Finepix at the moment and hates it. Apparently it just doesn't take a very good picture. I'm willing to spend up to 250 euro.

    Thanks

Why does she not like the Fuji, and what model is it? Fuji would be one of the brands of compact that is often reccommended here, and most folks find them very good. I have to say I'm surprised to hear it doesent take a good picture, is she sure its set up correctly?

The compact market is very competitive and most of the major brands have models which are almost indistinguishable from each other, my advice would be to have a look through the various camera sites and pick a few in your budget, then use the camera finder feature of flickr to see if there is one which stands out.

She currently has the Fujifilm FinePix Z10fd. Before that she had a previous model which seemed to take better images. I'm not sure what it is about the pictures that isn't up to scratch but I'd be resonably sure it's set-up correctly, I mean, it's a simple point and shoot camera, how could it be set-up incorrectly? It's going to be in automatic mode 90% of the time.

I'm told that Cannon are among the best of cameras. Any basis to this? I'm thinking of possibly something from the Cannon Ixus range. I've seen the Ixus 80IS for sale for 230 with case and 1gig memory card in a city centre camera shop. What think ye of this offer?

I just had a look at the specs of the FinePix Z10fd & it seems to be quite well equipped for a compact. I also think that Canon make very good compacts but that Fuji are also very good.

I doubt that the Fuji "doesn't take a very good picture" What sort of photograph is she trying to capture? All compacts have quite a lot of limitations & there are compromises.

Maybe you can post some of the Bad Pictures & the problem may become more apparent. Somehow I doubt that going from one compact to another will make a lot of difference.

I would be looking at the Canon IXUS range.

An example here for around €220.

Its also available in pink for the ladies. :)

I have this camera and I'm fairly happy with it, but like with any compact camera, it does have its limitations - thats why im getting my DSLR next month! Nice camera, well laid out and takes decent snaps! Id recommend it!

Thanks guys. I'm leaning towards these:
    Cannon IXUS 950 IS
    Casio Exilim S10
    Panasonic DMC-FX35

I'd love to hear any advice for/against.

Also, do any of these have a panoramic mode? Seems to be very difficult to find cameras with this feature. I guess panoramic functions are the preserve of the DSLR user.

I have not looked at the specs of any of those, but Canon do have a very good reputation in the compact market.

The Panoramas I have seen have been achieved by taking multiple images & then stitching them together.

I think that something like this will be the problem.
