Database Design for Small Business

    Hi,

I'm looking to find someone to design a database for a small business, incorporating invoicing, customer, employee and stock records.. Basically need the database to organise the day to day running of the business, which at the moment is in a fairly chaotic state....!

Had a look around the net for a business which provides this kind of service but couldn't find anything useful.. Does anyone know of anyone that would do this? And approx. what kind of price this service would cost?

    Thanks in advance! :)

I'd be very surprised if your requirements were not covered by one of the off the shelf accountancy packages, or you can have one of the accounting software companies tweak a package for you.

Hammertime is right, don't go reinventing the wheel.

My advice would be to look at a low-end accounts package like Sage. Concentrate first on getting the accounting systems in order. Once you have the accounts/invoicing sorted you can look at the other stuff.

The trick is to not try to do all at once or the people involved will just give up and go back to their old ways!

Most accounts packages have basic editions which you can upgrade for additional functionality as and when you need it.

They may or may not cater for all your requirements, but it is a good starting point.

As the guys have said ... try going with an already existing package ... its going to cost you a few hundred ... but if you have to get something custom developed you'll be talking about 1000's

In the past I worked for a company that didn't want to spend a few hundred so they got me to develop / start developing something (along with other work and duties) it took a long time and in the end there was an always changing feature set. To be honest you could go for years developing something and still not be finished and then you'll find oh I need it to handle BOM's as well or something and thats a whole other level of development.

As was already mentioned Sage would be a good option.

The sage line 50 package does nearly everything. The basic one is approx €1400 plus VAT.

how much are you ready to pay?
Also how legal your business requires to be (depending on the size)? if it is a small business with not enough income then you can do following.

if you want free sage line 50 with license key go to fenopy.com and download one for free.

However, i won't encourage you to do that if your business is capable of investing Euro 1400+ to buy the product+license.

I would agree that an accounts package would be the best starting point for you.

If you like to 'buy Irish', why not take a look at Sort My Books - www.sortmybooks.com. It's designed for Irish businesses and is simple to use, and you can avail of training if you wish.
