Setting up surround sound

So, just got a PS3 and I'm looking to match the picture quality with sound quality. At the moment, it's all coming through my tv. I did a search and found similar threads, but I'm not that tech savvy when it comes to home cinema systems.

At the moment I have a pretty nice system hooked up to my dvd player. Buying new speakers isn't my preferred option, as I really don't have the room. Also, I just shelled out enough money for the console so if I could use my current speakers it'd save me from going totally broke :)

So I guess my question is, can I connect the PS3 to the speakers?

What inputs does the system have?

    I'm not totally sure :/

It's not a straight-forward plug that goes into the dvd player, it's more like a panel; then there are wires coming out of it that go into each individual speaker.

Sorry for the sketchy description. I couldn't find a model number on any of the speakers either to check for technical information.

i presume its a dvd system with surround sound, if it is ya wont be able to run the ps3 through it cod it doesnt have inputs just outputs, i bought on e of them before but brought it back when i opened it

I can't believe I didn't think of that. I didn't buy the dvd player myself, which is why I don't remember the system coming with it. I don't suppose I can connect the PS3 to the dvd player?

Couldn't find the model number on the player, it's a Mitsubishi Black Diamond.

Without model no. we can't do jack **** for you. It should be on the back or underneath unit.
Going by its a Black Diamond unit, i won't have digital input for PS3 so no true surround sound.

The Z-5500 is sex for my ear drums. Only complaint is there is just one optical input.

    Possible semi-solution:

IF the dvd system has an RCA AUX input (normally two connectors, one red, one yellow), you can connect the ps3 to it using the PS3's supplied AV cable.

    1) Connect PS3 to tv using HDMI cable or whatever
    2) Connect PS3 to DVD player using AV cable (ignore the yellow lead, just use the red and white plugs - they carry the audio)
    3) Go into PS3 and select the AV line for audio out.
    4) Turn TV to HDMI channel to see PS3
    5) Turn DVD player to use aux input to send PS3 audio to speakers

This will give you faux surround sound - Pro Dolby II stereo signal should split over all 5.1 speakers if you are playing media that supports it. Its quite good in some games (GRID, GTA4)

For real surround sound, you need one of the speaker systems mentioned earlier, that give you an optical input.

No blown fuses for me. Fantastic on a movie like the new Rambo and games like MGS4. Absolutely amazing for the price.

Thanks, I'll try this when I get home. I'll eventually take the plunge and get a proper set.

As an aside, is the PS3 dvd player multi-region? Because if it is, we don't really need our dvd player and I could lose the speakers to free up room for new ones.

No, its not multi-region DVD player.
