Cuban Athlete Is Barred for Kicking Referee’s Face

BEIJING (AP) — A Cuban tae kwon do athlete and his coach were barred for life after the athlete kicked a referee in the face following his disqualification in his bronze medal match.

The Cuban coach, Leudis González, offered no apology for the actions of the athlete, Ángel Matos, during the men’s over-80 kilogram (176 pounds) match.

Matos was winning, 3-2, in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov. He remained there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked the referee, Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

“He was too strict,” González said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged that the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

“This is a strong violation of the spirit of tae kwon do and the Olympic Games,” the World Taekwondo Federation said in a release. It added that there would be a lifetime ban of González and Matos in all championships sanctioned by the organization and that all Matos’s records at the Beijing Games would be erased.

In his first match, Matos defeated Italy’s Leonardo Basile, then beat China’s Liu Xiaobo, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. But he lost to the South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semifinals to land in the bronze medal match.

“To me it was obvious he was unable to continue,” Chilmanov said. “His toe on his left foot was broken.”

Matos won the gold medal in this division at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th.

Bit of an idiot. I also read that the Olympics will erase him from the record books as if he had never competed in these Olympics

This won't do TKD any favours when it's inclusion in future Olympic games are reconsidered.

    A deserved ban IMO.

I'm surprised there's been no offical action re. Paddy Barnes verbal assault on the judges after his defeat.

I think that lad deserves a severe reprimand too.

True a very silly thing to do, but you can understand his frustration, I think to erase his achievements is a bit much, if this is the case then the Olympics mean nothing as surely it is about human ability breaking records etc. I can understand being erased for drug use but not for being daft.

Do you think Barnes should be reprimanded?.

i don't think paddy barnes should be reprimanded, the young lad landed some punches and got no points for them, i think he was beaten no two ways about that, but if your training hard and putting everything into something and in the end get cheated then i think its fair to say anybody would be pissed off,
for an example look at kenny egans fight this morning that guy was robbed of his gold medal, anybody who thinks he did not win that fight needs a check up

So what your saying is that everytime someone gets pissed off like that its ok to go on a similar rant?.

We've all been at the wrong end of poor judging, although not at Olympic level, so a lot of us here who compete can understand to some extent how fustrating it is.

But IMO there should be a line in the sand over which you don't cross without fear of having your knuckles wrapped.

This lad set a very poor example to youngster's starting out in the sport and the leniency shown to him, and the excuses made further go towards that poor example.

I don't think that it's too much. What he did was physical assault. The ref wasn't in a fight with him. It's clear that the Olympics don't want anything to do with people who behave in that manner. It's not as if he's the first person that's felt hard done by in a sporting event

I dont think you understand what I am saying Fozzy, I said it was a silly thing to do and yes he should be banned for life for what he did, what I dont like is the fact that they have wiped his achievements from the records, thats like if micheal phelps in 4 years time gets out of the pool and slaps a judge..will they wipe him from the record like he never existed or set new records...I doubt it.

I believe that what has actually happened is that the WTF has recommended to to the IOC that the guy be disqualified from his fifth place finishing position

They wouldn't wipe records or medals from the record. This guy won a gold medal in Sydney, he's not going to be stripped of that. He's just being disqualified from the competition in which he assaulted the ref. I'm sure there's something in the rule book about it, which he would have agreed to prior to competing

mairt i understand what your saying, but at the end of the day its human nature to get pissed off, paul griffin done the same thing when he was in the olympics, mick mc carthy the irish football manager done it in the world cup in usa,i'm not sure who ireland was playing at the time.. the point i'm trying to make is, it was a moment of madess and the lad was pissed off, i'm sure if they had given him time to cool off and let his corner talk him back down to earth and then let the tv crew interview him, i'm sure we wouldn't be having this debate.;)

Was wathcing this on BBC interactive on Saturday, was delighted to see both the cuban and his coach recieve a ban. This behaviour is unacceptable and especially not in keeping with the spirit of martial arts. Zero tolerance.

I can understand Paddy Barnes being frustrated and saying some things that were outta line but I'd still expect his coach to pull him up on that.

Fair enough we all lose the head but you still have to excersize some control over yourself. There are ways to protest and appeal, judges are human, mistakes can be made.

And anyone practising anything anywhere should try and do it with some class. Telling someone to "keep their medal" or kicking the ref in the head, or throwing your medal down on the floor (swedish wrestler) or raising your hand in the air before the fight is actually over (John Joe Joyce) are not good examples of this.

Not sure if it will work. Can not see it myself here at work.
Yesterday at home this link was working. And otherwise... you still have the pics...

Don't think you'll find any of the videos still working.
Here's some pics from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=par8wbuWR-8&feature=related

There's a pic of the refs slightly cut lip after, you'd think he'd have done more damage, unless he tried to control it a bit, but I sincerely doubt that.

The Kazakhstan fighter that was against the cuban, immeditaely stood up, threw his hands in the air, hugged his coach, grabbed a flag and did a little dance up and down the sidelines. Not exactly the sportsman either. Not that that is any excuse whatsoever for the cuban's behaviour.
