Lipo battery memory effect

Hi, I'm wondering why you need to let your laptop discharge nearly fully before charging. I've ruined the life of a battery before by not doing this. I though lipo wasn't supposed to have memory effect like older battery technologies? http://www.hooked-on-rc-airplanes.com/lipo-battery-packs.html
