I think that oil could smell?

    http://www.oillampman.com/quicklist.html

Google - Kerosene seems to be popular and "lamp oil" no less

    Where to get either?

I have methylated spirits and use it for outdoor cooking but havnt tried it.
    Has a low burning flame.

Perhaps I should ask my insurance company?

Do not use meths you will end up with an uncontrollable fire.
    Paraffin smells bad like kerosene.
You can buy Lamp oil, in clear or coloured versions, it is basically deodorised kerosene.

One of those shops that sell that cut glass stuff, waterford crystal and sculptures.
They should have it or perhaps a hardware store.

I bought citronella oil as an insect repellent in one of those little rip off miniature bottles for about 6 euros approx a few years ago. I felt stung then at that price and had good reason now I see this - "€1.45 for a 2litre bottle"

If you are burning the lamp indoors, DO NOT use the Kerosene that is used for home Heating; this is Class 2, (C2) and is quite impure. You Will stink the room out. What you require is a Cleaner Oil that used to be sold as "Esso Blue". As far as I know it can only be bought as Pre-Packed Paraffin, 5L, Blue label clearly marked Class 1, C1. Try an old Fashioned Hardware Shop. I bought some last Year. B&Q also do it in a 4L Plastic can with a Pink Label. I have bought both recently and use them regularly during the Winter doors. No smell.
NEVER leave a Burning Lamp unattended.
