Are students allowed put up posters on campus for events that have nothing to do with the college? Obviously I mean in appropriate places not blacketing the college.

The only poster boards in college are specifically SU or CSC boards. Therefore only college related events sanctioned by either of those bodies can advertised on those boards.

As Ronny said.
Otherwise we would have terrible trouble with individual students working for promo companies and just claiming that its personal student stuff.

ah ya can yeah theyll be taken down after 3-4 days though. think the notice boards are cleared every weekend anyway

You can put up posters, but the OP asked if you're allowed, which you are not. Poster boards are cleared away on Fridays, but it is not unheard of for vigilant students to rip down unapproved posters on any day of the week.

Actually, i think you should wear a balaclava permanently, but that's just to improve aesthetics.
