power cut in my room, PC wont turn on.

Okay about an hour and a half ago now. I was browsing the net on my main pc while the other pc in my room was downloading.

My main pc and monitor suddenly turned off. As if it crashed. Before I had a chance to think it suddenly made a loud noise (fans spinning up) and then turned off again but this time with everything else in my room cept the lights.

This all happened in the space of about 4 seconds.

I assumed we had a power cut but all the other rooms are fine except the one beside mine. So my room and that rooms sockets do not work, and the trip switch did not go down. We have full power everywhere else in the house.

Paranoid as I am, and always thinking the worst, I was worried my pc might be damaged. So I carried it to a room with working power and sure enough it wouldn't turn on  I even tried different power cords just in case.

My other pc however (the one I use for downloading) did turn on...

So now that I've calmed down and looked back on the events, I'm thinking that my PSU failed, and actually caused the power outage. I'm really fkin pissed off cause I got a good PSU (corsair 650w) and all I was doing was reading web pages at the time

I've no way yet to tell if this has caused any damage to any other parts of my pc.

I only got the PSU just before the summer there, so I've not even had it that long.

Anyways, I'm pissed off and dunno what to do, typing on a laptop atm powered by plugging into an extension cord coming from a room across from mine

seek advice and information from anyone willing.

sounds like your pc caused the surge to me.

you getting any booting at all or is it totally dead to the world.

The trip switches in this house don't drop all the way down after a fault - they drop to a position just slightly away from on and it can be difficult to spot which one is tripped. To reset, it needs to be turned off and on again.

Sounds like you'll need a new power supply. The rest of the machine is probably OK.

Is your main PC plugged into an extension lead and/or via any sort of surge protector? If it is it could rule out th PSU being the problem but it sounds doubtful. I'd agree that it sounds like your PSU is the cause. Best bet is to swap it out for another if you have one that's suitable (or if lower rated maybe take out GFX etc) and try testing the PC that way.

As regards getting the power back to your sockets; I'd find the switch concerned and reset it anyway to be sure. More than likely you've blown a fuse somewhere or other and for some reason the switch hasn't gone down (as you know im sure, usually with fuses they go and the switch goes down then won't come back up). [EDIT: Snowbat said similar there as I was typing]

I'd say get it looked at professionally tbh (the wiring that is), the switch possibly should have gone down and if there's something that made it act oddly I wouldn't mess with it.

Really appreciate the replies guys, thanks. I'm worried as you can guess.

    Totally dead it seems. :(

I don't know much in this area really. I've never had power go down in only one (or two) rooms before, its always been all the sockets if something happened. Which I would then flick up the blue switch and things would be fine again. I dunno anything about the other switches. And neither does my mam it seems.

Nah the pc and monitor were plugged into the wall sockets. I don;t have another psu, the one in my old pc is part of the case (artic cooling bla bla) so its not something I can take out and test other machines with.

I'm assuming I can return this psu to komlpett and get a replacement. just means im gonna be worrying for what could be weeks about the rest of my gear :(

I'll look at it again tomorrow morning but all I know is the blue switch was not down. I dunno what the story is with the other switches.

Bah I dunno what to do, I'd rather not have to get someone in obviously. Damn it, is this normal? Do PSU's **** up like this sometimes?

As someone who used to work at manufacturing PSU's a simple answer is yes... they often just go down. Faulty wiring /bad components... If you only got it recently from KOMPLETT ensure you check your contract i.e warranty..if its more than 28 days you'll probably have to send it back to the manufacturer rather than the distributor(KOMPLETT)

some of the switches may trip for certain parts of the house (wherever the wire to the board runs through the house.) No harm checking the trip switches on the board, flip them all off, then back up to the on position. See if you get power back. Also, your lights are on a different circuit, so obviously that one didn't trip. How many of the trip switches are down?

Just out of interest, have you tried a different power cable to the pc? I doubt it's a blown fuse as you said the fans spun back up after it powered down, but no harm in ruling it out.

Also you'd generally have 6 months to 1 year of a warranty with parts and I you'll be returning it to Komplett via an RMA unless otherwise stated.

I see, thanks. The rest of my components should be fine though yeah?

What's strange is I wasnt even gaming, I was reading webpages for about 2 hours when it happened.

I'm grand now I just flicked up the one that was down and the powers back.

Right, which would be faster though? RMA with komplett or sending it to corsair?

unfortunately it is possible that the surge may have damaged your mother board... you wouldn't actually know for sure until you put in a new psu... Most times i've lost a psu my board has been unharmed but...
i wouldn't know who would return faster tbh...

I probably didn't make it clear but obviously I wouldn;t go getting someone in unless the switch refused to behave - at that points it becomes a better safe than sorry type job. It's fixed now though by the sounds of it :)

I'd RMA it through Komplett, it does sound like the PSU cause the fault, so it's best to send it to them.

Your contract is with Komplett so you should send it back to them and let them supply another one.

    Fck :(

Well my mobo is a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R if that makes any difference...

Anyways gonna apply for my RMA now.

    Thanks all!

have you tried replacing the psu's fuse in the plug? if your psu surged it may have blown the fuse in the plug or in the gang lead (4 socket extension)
