I have a music collection of 180 gigs on my external harddrive and im wondering whats the cheapest way of storing it online to prevent losing it all to a crashed or stolen harddrive

is it possible or practical to store this online somewhere and if yes wheres the best/cheapest place?

i saw a site called megaupload which is selling a lifetime membership for 199 euro that includes 1 terabyte of storage space

    http://www.megaupload.com/premium/

is this the best option or does anyone know a better alternative?

That is pretty good value seeing as it's a lifetime memnership. The problem is uploading 180GBs could take a long time (it depends on your internet connection).

    Hi delllat

Also bear in mind that the legal position of all the online fielsharing co's such as megaupload and rapidshare etc is now in jeopardy due to legal challenges.
The copyright cops and decency detectives are all over them at the moment and some commentators are saying that they are not long for this world. Just make sure that you dont give your money to an organisation that subsequently folds - cos you'd never get your money back.

Its a bit pointless really, considering you can get any music you want from the internet anyways

a lifetime membership means the lifetime of the site, not your lifetime
megaupload could close down at any stage

Also HD are getting cheaper by the day, you'd pick up a 200gb for €50 or less

Carbonite.com is $50 per year for unlimited space but as Kstaford said, you never know when a company will close down meaning you'll have to start uploading to somewhere new again.

Amazon Simple Storage Service is worth a look too. Combined with Jungledisk it offers unlimited storage with no monthly upload fees. You pay per Gb uploaded.

When were megaupload/rapidshare hit with legal challenges? They comply with the DMCA which means they are not doing anything illegal, and they delete copyrighted content on request

I remember reading a number of articles over recent months relating to rs in particular. BBC covered it on their click show and I think I read about it in an MSDN blog.
There ahve been many challenges against RS by private corps
    http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/35991/118/
    http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/35870/118/

    etc

but what was different about the BBC reports was that he heat was being applied at governmental level by US legislators. As I say, I cant remember where I read or saw these reports but they are floating about.

But even if they are never challenged legally, I would balk at the prospect of taking out a lifetime subscription to any company. Who's lifetime are they talking about, theirs? or the customers ?

I just can't see my precious files being available to me say in 50 years time if I store them with a filesharing company, particularly when the legal eagles are sniffing about looking for ways to break it down

I've seen this before, GEMA tried to complain but didnt get very far, it would be very though to go after the likes of rapidshare due to it not being p2p, the only realistic way i could see is if rapidshare banned repeat offenders who upload copyright material, then they'll just come back and re-register probably,

Zoogmo is also worth a look.

Free, P2P sharing of files but only with people you choose. So once you have a few people who are willing to share with you then you're sorted !
