I've just finished my business degree and managed to get a 1:1. But what use it? What kind of jobs can I look for. Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

I hate this crowd, but they might actually be of benefit. GradIreland.com. Also where did you graduate from, surely you should have being applying for graduate jobs since last year. Maybe contact your career service at your college.

Also might want to consider what your interested it in.

A business degree is a fantastic qualification.

If I were you I'd jump straight into the Smurfit UCD MBS and take it from there.

its not really all it means is you studied something for four years and passed
and the first question re enforces the point
you have someone with a 1:1 and doesn't know what to do to get a job

I have seem plenty of 1:1s that are book smart but cannot relate to the real world and have not practical exp

To be honest it's difficult to know what to say, unless you yourself have an idea of what you want to do. Maybe reply with a little more info on you - jobs you've had (summer, part-time, unpaid, whatever) that you liked, parts of your course you enjoyed the most, etc.

There's not really much point telling us ''I've a 1.1. business degree, tell me what i should do'' - you have to give us something to work with! To be honest I'm surprised you haven't visited the careers section during your time at uni and researched what you like (maybe you have, let us know!)..........

If I were you I would go nowhere near the above mentioned masters. Unfortunatly, the Smurfit masters is not as good as it used to be and is still quite expensive. I couldn't believe it when I seen this thread on boards last week - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055353948.

Since when were you allowed to do a joint thesis at masters level? Looks quite poor on Smurfit for allowing it to happen.

Anyone see that comedy sketch on BBC Three with the Career Guidance Officer.

    This thread is like that.

Maybe the OP should consider banging a Premiership Footballer?

    Theres an opening at Stoke?

    Its £300k a year

So actually it doesnt really matter what degree you do in smurfitt. You're paying for a brand. It has a strong enough name abroad and frankly it doesnt matter if they took the monkey approach with their thesis its still useful

(Monkey approach = 1million monkeys will eventually write a masterpiece)

I graduated in '07 with a 2.1 Business Degree. Now I'm working in I.T., my business degree had IT streams which I pursued and then when I finished I promoted the IT element as thats the avenue I wanted to go down.

You have a very useful and versitile qualification however You need to take stock of what you feel you liked doing most whether it be Marketing/Finance/IT/CRM etc and then look in that area. Grad positions can be good as they can give you a taste of many areas so that you can make an informed decision on what you want a career in.

In all likelihood it will take you a year or two to find your feet, the only gripe I have about what was lacking in my degree was career guidance, It was present but very generic and didnt match you up to your skillset.

Congrats on the 1.1 but remember that in itself is not a free ticket to a great job. Whatever you decide you need to get applying as its a dog eat dog environment!

Hey thanks for the feedback. I work full time during the day I did my degree at night. Don't want to say too much about where I work but I like it just would prefer more money (like everybody I suppose). I'd like to try something in marketing but I hate sales! I also like the sound of I.T. Idid study Business Information Systems and Information management which was based around computers but I don't know if I have the computer skills. Could you tell me how you got involved in I.T. Bravestarr0825.

    Thanks

I did a BBS majoring in Information Systems Management (in the evenings/weekends akin to you). I'm shortly to start as an EO JSA in the Department of Agriculture.

I worked in a callcentre for a while in a role which included sales. I hated it more than anything else- I was pretty good at it, but felt dirty trying to sell people things (and even worse because I was actually quite good at it). The day I threw in the towel in that job, I celebrated.

You do have to accept that regardless of what area is- you will start at the bottom and work your way up. Graduate recruitment probably starts around 30k, rising (sometimes rapidly) as you display competence and skills in whatever you're doing. The landscape for recruitment has changed markedly in the last 18 months though......

My degree also included those same subjects but They are not really enough to go into a technical IT role. I also did other IT subjects as part of my options, they were Database Design in 3rd year and SQL in my last year. Knowing SQL has basically been my ticket into the job I was looking to do.

I would categorize myself as an Application Support/System Analyst..Its within these roles you would usually find Business/IT grads as you need to liaise with both the business side and the more technical IT side. You need to be extremely careful when looking at these roles as you could be duped into a call centre enviroment and you do not want that, when I was being interviewed for my current job I asked more questions then the interviewers to ensure it was not call centre-esque!

I think that if you were to learn SQL or some other programming language you will open up many many doors as I have friends who are grads in Marketing and Finance and both have had to settle for jobs that were not quite right but there was not much choice...
My IT grad friends have had no trouble finding work, I started a job one month after college, stayed for 11months and felt I could go up in €'s with the experience gained, I did and now am up 10k on my previous salary.

If you look at the basic example of demand and supply...

The was approx 200 final year business students in my last year,

10/200 were in the IT stream, the rest was split out between Marketing/Finance and CRM...Marketing taking up the most. My IT lecturer said he is blue in the face telling people about the lack of IT grads epidemic!!!

I could understand that learning a programming language may seem daunting but it will stand to you!
