I'm so freakin excited! Can't wait till term starts! Wondering if anyone could advise me on some of the following...

Should I get a laptop or a notebook? I'm doing psychology so I'm sure i'll only need office but i don't have access to a computer at home... Are American notebooks compatible in Ireland? Trying to keep the costs down so thinking of purchasing from ebay?

I'm 28, are there many "mature" students in Trinity? I'm quite sociable but don't want to be known as "that old girl", haha!

Are there many hot (mature) geeks? I don't know what it is but people with brains are always so much hotter, does anyone agree? :)

I can't wait!!! I really want to go stationary shopping immediatly but i'm holding off to see what it is that i'll need.

    Thanks!

FYI. Laptops and Notebooks are the same thing

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laptop

A laptop computer or laptop (also notebook computer, notebook and notepad) is a small mobile computer, typically weighing 3 to 12 pounds (1.4 to 5.4 kg), although older laptops may weigh more.

There are student access computers on campus with Office installed, I don't know psychology, but yeah, that should be all you need, so no need to shell out on a laptop I would say.
Yes, they are compatible, just pick up a power socket adapter, a couple of euro.
Buy from Dell, I have one and it's been great, but I paid a premium to get a good one.
All my own humble opinion, of course

15% of places reserved in Trinity are reserved for students of a 'non-traditional' background, a majority of which are taken up by Mature Students. So that's a lot of people :)

Which course in psych? Don't worry about your age. :)

Edit, as you're doing psych you'll need SPSS which you can get from IS Services.

TSM 2nd year Psychology student reporting in here!

Psychology has a *lot* of available computer facilities in the building, so you should be fine in terms of access to those. Rather than purchasing Office, you could just use the free utility OpenOffice, which does everything Office can and can save its files as MS Office documents. http://www.openoffice.org

The number one thing to look for in a laptop, if you really feel you want one, is a *long* battery life. That and a wireless Internet card. I recommend not bringing it to lectures.

Brush up on your Microsoft Excel skills, as lab classes involve using it quite a bit. Admittedly you use SPSS more, but Excel is also a useful tool. You can pick up a copy of SPSS from Lisa Gilroy in the Psychology department for E15.

Not only has Trinity a lot of mature students, Psychology has even *more* than average! They tend to be very cool folks who, not coincidentally, take the best notes of anyone. You will not be considered old - certainly not by all the ladies in their fifties and older, at least! :) I'm two years older than most "regular" students in my year and don't even notice it.

Stationery? A notepad with lots of pages that tear out easily, two colours of pen (red and blue/black), a couple of binders to keep your notes in. That's about it. Oh, and a scientific calculator. I recommend the Sharp DAL.

Oh, and don't leave doing your lab reports till the night before. Seriously.

    Have fun!

I love my stationary shopping. I've bought what I need for my masters already. Over €20 worth for three subjects :)

I'll be 27 going into the new term. Age isnt an issue. There were lads in my class in their 30s. Decent lads. They were usually the people you went to if you needed a dig out with stuff.

Congratulations on getting in! You're gonna need a lot of stationary,so you might as well start shopping for it straight away, plus it's like the best kind of shopping!

I'm a SF in Law and I'm 26, only a couple of mature students in my year but the Mature Student Society are pretty good if you want to get to know other mature students. Also, mature student orientation week will give you an opportunity to meet other mature students from your course. You'll love it. Enjoy!

I would advise to get a laptop, especially MacBook as you can run Mac and Windows on it.
Yes American computer are compatible in Ireland and in any country on this planet.
    Hope that helps
