I was tempted to go to Ronnie Drew's funeral the other day but I wasnt sure if it was my place, I had never met the man, but was a huge fan and saddened by his death. But I kind of wasnt sure if I would be out of place. Ended up not going anyway.

No harm in paying your respects to a dead man. I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Would definitely go to an After Hours, Soccer or Personal Issues Mods funeral but thats it. Wouldn't bother with any of the lowly forums like Scuba Diving, Green Issues or BGRH.

I was at Phil Lynotts Funeral in 1986 but i hung back in the background i was on lunch break from school when it was on.. i would go again to funerals of musicians that have affected my direction in life because music for me is something that has been with me from a very very early age and means more to me than a lot of other things, so if someone passed away that was part of my life then yes i would go and pay my respects!!

Its really depressing that there are people out there who are actually happy that Jade has cancer. Doesn't exactly restore my faith in human nature! :( I doubt anyone on here actually knows her personally and yet theres this common hatred of her to the point that some people are reveling in the fact that she has to face this disease! It seems that none of you have had anyone close to you suffer from cancer thus have no idea of how scary and horrific it can be for the sufferer and their families.

I'd leave well alone because I think a funeral should be a private thing for family and friends. If it was somebody i liked and respected, I'd visit the grave a day or two later and pay my respects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

Speaking of Maggie Thatcher, I believe it should be a national holiday the day that auld c*nt dies.

Other than that, I wouldn't go to a celebritys funeral, funerals should be an occasion for family and friends. i'd sign a book of condolences or visit the grave though.

Well my Grandmother was good friends with Ronnie Drew and he lived kind of near us..
My Dad also know him quite well...ive only met him once but even I didnt go to the funeral
I think theres just too many people who attended 'for the sake of it' - not emplying youre like that, but over 1000 people went...sooo you can guarauntee some people went for the "kicks"
    Its a sad thiing imo

    But RIP Ronnie Drew

This politician stood up to the band of terrorists that is the IRA, reduced the powers of trade unions that thretened to ruin the British economy and defended British nationals that had their land take over by an Argentinian military regime in the Falklands. Following her retirement she was one of few political figures in the west to speak out against the tyranny and meglomania under which millions of ethnic Bosnians, Croats and Kosovans had to suffer while Slobodon Milosovic ruled the lands forerly known as Yugoslavia. More importantly, she criticised the west's apathy to the situation and constanltly pressed for greater intervention to liberate the oppressed natives. In relation to Ireland, she signed the Anglo Irish Agreement which for the first time gave the republic some influence in Northern Ireland governance. While I agree she had faults and made some serious errors of judgement in relation to policy,[ the poll tax being perhaps the most infamous] I certainly wont be celebrating her death. When the day does arrive, may she rest in peace.

I think people need to re-examine what they are saying in terms of welcoming the death of people or the possibility of them contracting a life threatening illness. I despise Jade Goody and Kerry Katona. I hope they slip from public consciousness and live the rest of their lives in anonymity with some mone to get by, but I certainly don't wish death upon them, that's a tad harsh tbh.

As for Maggie T, she did a lot of crap things but I reckon only redundant Welsh miners etc should be really the most visceral. I stress that I am no great fan of hers but as I started by saying, people should think a bit more carefully before wishing death upon people, you know what I mean?

Wouldn't go to a funeral, probably only a removal. Saying that only ever been at one "famous" persons, which was the late Ollie Byrne CEO of Shelbourne FC, who actually died literally 1 year ago (15 minutes off the mark).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

I'd only go to a funeral if it was local - wouldn't go travelling up the country if I didn't actually know the person. Definitely wouldn't go to a removal - can't stand them.

Oh and why the hell are people talking about Jade Goody and cancer here? Fair enough if you don't like her, but celebrating the fact she has cancer is a bit pathetic.

she was also the woman that said "there is no such thing as society", stook over the introduction of the grossly unfair poll tax, let a democratically elected mp die in prison from hunger strike, caused the dessimation of hundres of english mining villages with the resultant social problems set to last for generations (have you ever been to Ilkeston or north nottinghamshire??), didn't she also say that people in their 30's who are still using public transport are failures?, espoused a get-rich-at-all-costs culture... I could go on, but Elvis Costello said it best when he sang when she's gone, I will 'tramp the dirt down'...:D

I agree, Cancer isn't funny... so leave it out!

OP: Only if I knew/liked the famous person, was very tempted to go to Ronnie Drew's funeral but I had to work.

Pity she didn't care as much about the Chileans when she supported Pinochet to the hilt.

I'm not happy that she has cancer. However, I resent the fact that it's all over the media that she has cancer. There's so many more important things going on in the world than what illness some Z-lister is suffering from.

Good Lord, I really can't get over the people wishing Jade Goody was dead. She's annoying and I wish she'd **** off but come on.

And Thatcher was a bitch, worst thing to happen to Britain since the Blitz.
