I was actually part of the pilot Transition year in 93/94 and loved it. We got to do a lot more in that year then is done now because they were basically trialling the different types of courses/events etc. One thing I would be wary of though is that because there's less of an emphasis on study and academics, it can very easily lead to a drop in discipline when you get to 5th year. One thing it did do was forge some very strong friendships with people I am still very close to.

I skipped it myself. 6th will be hard but I'm glad of my choice. I think I'll be happiest when I have school over and done with while the Transition Year people still have to do the Leaving Cert.

I say the maturity of doing Transition Year helps a little bit. It sounds OK but a waste of a year all the same I think.

Didn't do it and have mixed feelings about it, I'm happy about the way things have turned out, the college course I'm in, the friends I've ended up with, but I wanted to do it at the time for the experience, prolonging secondary school wouldn't have been too bad either haha!

I did it. An absolute waste of my time. I'm doing a post grad in ucc this year so I guess I feel vindicated in my short little rant.

I hated transition. I actually went backwards when I did it. THey had a ridiculous approach to the whole affair.

    a) you HAD to do it
    b) it was not to be considered as a real year
    c) it was a real year

You can see the academic dilemma ¬¬

Every teacher says it but it's true, it's what you make of it. You're obviously going to have a **** year if you just doss through without getting involved.

A school wouldn't run a TY program if there was nothing to do as it would be a waste of a year, you probably just didn't get involved enough........

    Nope, didn't do it.

3rd Year was my least favourite year of school and at the time I just said to myself "I'm fed up with school, I wanna get out of there and into college as fast as possible."

As it turned, I rather enjoyed 5th and 6th Year and I was actually a little sad to be leaving 2nd level after just 5 years.

I am still glad I didn't do 4th Year though, for a number of reasons.

*I would not have gotten my preferred subject choices otherwise. (I would have had do History....ugh!)
*I'm really not great working in groups. And TY involves rather a lot of that, I believe.
*I made some great friends with people in 5th Year who I probably would never have become friends with if I had done 4th Year.
*I went into 5th Year with most of my Junior Cert knowledge still in the back of my mind. Many people forget things they learned for the JC when in TY and become lazy, and then get a shock when they come into 5th Year.

Those are just my reasons. A lot of people in my school do TY and love it.

I did transition year and there are pros and cons to doing it.

t was quite possibly the best year of my life in terms of fun, I made loads of new friends and started a band(still going strong:D).

Also, it gave me a year to sit back, do nothin and mature a little bit more, make proper informed decisions about my future etc. If it wasnt for transition year, odds are i would be starting law in UCC tomorrow.

ON the other hand though, midway through the year, i will admit, the whole monotony of doing nothing got boring, however it picked up again at the end of the year. Also the little work ethic i had from the JC was absolutley gone.

All said, i would reccomend doing it

Yes. Definatly a to-do year. You'd be surprised how much you can mature in a year.

I said yes but I don't recommend it. I did it and enjoyed it, but if I was in the same position now I don't think I would. Get out of school as fast as you can! Well assuming you are going to college.

    Yes. I don't recommend it.
Did transition year many years ago. Was the first time it was available in our school, so it was a new experience for both teachers and students alike. I opted to do it, because a time I had no idea what I was going to do for the leaving cert and after that.

The year gave me confidence to talk to groups of people. It also gave the inspiration for what I wanted to do, something computer related. Would definitely agree that you get as much out of it as you put in. The first 2 months I was very quiet and tried to avoid as much work as possible in class. Once I started to get involved more in the classes the experience improved dramatically. Was the best year of my time in secondary school.

    Would definitely recommend to people.

If you can read this, you're too close!

One of the only reasons im doing it is because i will be only 17 going into college and thats apparently too young.
In other words i needed to mature.

But what ive found this year is that the teachers we have are so unbelievably ****. . .Like everyone messes in the class, even the swots because its just soo easy. The teacher just cant control the class. For example we spend approx 10 mins doing english a day from a 40 min class.Over a week we would have one full class finished.

    Like wtf !

Its not as if the whole class are scumbags that mess and are always in trouble, its just the easy teachers which just so happens to be every fckn teacher.Last year we didnt mess in certain teachers classes because they could control it.

Maybe its because its 4th year but i seriously doubt that.Teachers dont let their guard down on some particular classes.Bad thing is though is that it gets reported to form tutor so while the ****ty teacher sits there close to breakdown, shes actually taking note of it and sending it to the f.t.

    Anyway rant over :D
