This thread'll probably be moved now but I gotta vent & I can't be bovvered looking for the appropriate one & there's no-one looking at the travel forums...

    Just booked flights to Munich (Beer Fest!!), first off;
    • Each ticket was € 100 more expensive today than last Friday
    • The airline then had the gumption to suggest that they gave me a 20% discount - bringing the cost back to a mere € 70 above last Friday's quote for both tickets
    • They charged a € 5 handling charge each way for each ticket
    • They then tried to charge me € 12 each for the online check-in of bags
    • They tried to snake some travel insurance in (€ 18 pp)
    • I also tried to choose the seats - you have to pay for that now too! And the f*ckers then left a disclaimer saying that even tho you can't get a refund, you may be put in different seats than the ones you choose! FFS!!!!!
Jeebus M Chrysler, ye fukkin get ripped off livin in our great capital & ye get ripped off when ye try to get the fukk out!!

Been ripped off lately? Vent here...

    senseless rant

Go back 20 years to before the era of ryanair/easyjet and their 'rip-off charges', and you'll find it was about twice as expensive to travel by air back then.
Don't know how lucky you are to be able to fly so cheap.

Nah! Don't bother. There's enough of these type threads there already.

    No more please.

Supply and demand, welcome to the real world.

Seat prices increase due to demand, if there is more demand and less seats - the price increases.

When you see low prices, especially to an event - book it, don't wait a week and complain :pac:

I think you might need to familarise yourself with the ryanair business model...

The less seats left on a flight, the more each one costs, so you should have booked a week ago.

Yeah I know, book early & all that. Still tho, all those sneaky charges really tick my boxes.

What really annoys me is the charge you have to pay for paying with a credit card. It's at least €10 if not €20.

If they were sneaky charges, you'd have only found out about them when you get your credit card bill back.

The fact that you knew what each cost was, and agreed to each cost along the way tells me that they weren't quite the sneakiest charges ever.

As previously stated, I remember paying £212 return from Dublin to London back in the early '90s. We are far better off now.

You mean that airplane tickets tend to yo-yo unexpectedly depending on time of booking? AND they try to get you to add on all these 'unnecessary' essentials that have been around a good while now? The pure nerve. My word, who do I complain to.......<takes out Independent Directory.....flicks to green/government-ey bit......hmm>

    Funny, I booked flights to Munich (Beer Fest!!) last Friday, I'm chuffed! First off;
    • Each ticket is € 100 more expensive today than last Friday
    • The airline recognise that some people would be foolish enough to book late so kindly offered a 20% discount - bringing the cost back to a mere € 70 above last Friday's quote for both tickets. That was nice of them.
    • They only charged a € 5 handling charge each way for each ticket, better than some airlines out there!
    • They did however charge me € 12 each for the online check-in of bags
    • They gave me the option of some travel insurance so I wouldn't have to look elsewhere for it if I wanted it (€ 18 pp)
    • I also tried to choose the seats - you have to pay for that now too althoug at least they give you an option of choosing seats, unlike some airlines. And they kindly disclaim in advance saying that even though you can't get a refund, you may be put in different seats than the ones you choose! That Gave me the option of not booking with them and trying another airline. Nobody forced me to book that airline but I did anyway.

But that's not even the best part, the best part is that its all Irelands fault that these companies charges these fees how dare we as a country force airlines to charge people more I mean that's not right I blame Bertie for all this you know!

I was under the impression that the European Union was supposed to have compelled airlines into displaying the "full" price on all flights and not select optional extras by default on their websites. Seems they are deliberately flaunting this!

I agree that we are better off nowadays flying, but what annoys me is this latest crap of baggage fees and fuel surcharge.

If you go to a shop to buy bread the cost may have gone up but at least it's displayed on the price tag, you don't get to the checkout to find out that they added twice the price onto the displayed price due to shipping cost and bad harvest surcharge!!

No not really. They show the toal minimum price. Why would they show the total with all the options and make it look more expensive than it actually is?

Its not a loaf of bread. If you want to compare it to bread then compare it to a baguette. you can buy a baguette for say €1. but if you want butter and ham it'll cost you extra.

The vast majority of people prefer to have the option of bringing check in baggage. You can go away for a weekend with just a carry on bag of clothes and items.

One thing I do think is absolute rip off is the €20 crdit card handling charge by Ryan air. And you can only use credit card in Ireland  But having said that they're still the cheapest by far.

Was there perhaps a sale on last week? Why didn't you book the tickets last week.

Or why not fly with Lufthansa? They fly Dublin-Munich 4 days a week, don't charge you for checking in bags (up to 20kg), you can check-in online and choose your seats, don't think they do travel insurance, although the handling charge is 14 per person per booking (single or return). And they even serve you a free snack on board!
Of course, they might charge more than your original airline, so no doubt that's also a rip-off.

The flight going up in price in a week is expected tbh. Heck, I was booking flights to Thailand last week. I called USIT, and got a price all in of €906 each. I called back 30 mins later to book, and they had gone up by €200. Broke my heart, but if they sell like hot cakes, thats how it goes.

Have to say, It is great that the cost of flying has dropped. However, all these CC and baggage charges are very annoying. When you don't book a bag, they replace it with a handling fee or something. It just feels like a p!ss take. BMI are my preferred carrier these days. Good prices, and all in the advertised price. I have been a great fan of Ryanair for a long time, and love what they have done. However, they're beginning to annoy me.

................Still always on my list of airlines to check prices with though. Though I'm beginning to find better alternatives for my frequent London trips.

This is actually about to change:

Yes, but a "fuel surcharge" is a ridiculous concept. You are purchasing a flight. In order to provide you with a flight they must have fuel on board. It is plain misleading to not disclose cost that are not optional form the start of the booking process.

It's €5 per person per leg, isn't it?
And you can use Visa Electron, for no extra charge.

As far as I'm aware, there is no 'electron' in Ireland, and they don't deal with Laser. Something that wrecks my head over here actually. Why don't the banks do visa debit cards. Laser is useless outside the country.

That makes sense because I was booking for 2. But why does it matter how many legs? I'm paying for everything at once, should only be one credit card transaction to "handle", which is what the charge is for. Its clear there is no regualtion or law to cover this and thats the only reason they get away with it. Same as buying multiple concert tickets in one transaction, you get charged per ticket.

I've never come across a fuel surcharge as an additional charge on the price. I thought it was always included in the initial price. That would be a bit dodgy alright to have it as an add on.

They've been adding the fuel surcharge for a year or so now on long haul flights. On my last trip to NYC I booked the outgoing with Continental & return with Air Lingus (American site) - saved € 100 on fuel surcharges.

Funny idea, fuel surcharges - I was under the impression that fuel costs would be a consideration in the original price...

Ah to be fair, ryanair charge you to use a RYANAIR credit card, they charge you administration fee to get your taxes back normally negating any refund

they charge you 3 euro for using a master card for EACH WAY on the trip, can you imagine if dunnes or dixons or tk maxxs charged you 3 euro to PAY THEM

i mean if ryanair gave you the offer of a charges free way of paying them i'd understand, but there isnt.

Every business has to process transactions, why do ryanair get away with charging you to process theirs?

they baggage fee's are going up and up

can you imagine if dublin bus charged you 1 euro to the village with 50 cent transaction processing charge and 2 euro baggage fee

im sorry but airlines or not, the way they charge their customers is rediculous

Change of Name on a booking (even for just a misspelling) : €120
Refund taxes Administration charge : €20

How can these get away with it i'll never know and the fact the law is starting to change all the better

Simply because you would use your credit card less. On a credit card, spend equals balances equals interest equals profit.

On a debit card spend equals taking money out of your current account balance. End of.
