How many hands per session?

How many hands on average would you play in an online cash-game session?
(Regardless of wins/losses) I know you should leave if your just not feeling the table.

Would you stare relentlessly at the screen taking notes or flip through a magazine during hands?

500-1000 and I don't usually do anything to distract me.

That's crazy. Next time you post some big downswing graph, remember this post

About 150 hands per hours by 3 and 1/2 hours so around 500 hands or so.

I was doing 4 tables but wasn't doing well so dropped down to 3 recently. When I had 4 tables they were minimised and the PT3 HUD wasn't clear and was getting in the way of the fold () check () fold to any bet () etc. buttons and also I couldn't 'add to buddies' on some avatars cos the HUD was in the way. So I've dropped down to 3 tables and find it much easier to have them all full screen,

so yeah about 500 / 600 hands per session.

300-500 at which stage my eyes are dry and the repetitive shuffle noise is on a continous loop in my sleep / wake cycle.

Ive been trying to do 1500 a day. On Tuesday I played 1502, Wednesday I played 1504, and Thursday I finally cracked it and played exactly 1500.

    About 1000
4 tables of 6 max for around 3 hours

And yes, stare relentlessy with a bit of leonard cohen/jazz in the background
Interestingly, I have tried loads of different music and Leonard is consistently the most +EV

How do people play for 3 hours in one go. I definitely couldnt concentrate for that long. Also I find any music at all distracting.

Darragh, do you not think this is a bad idea? I mean, most people practice a x-buyin stop loss... What if you're down 10 buyins after 1500 hands? Do you still quit? How about if you're will 10 buyins at the softest table ever?

Just depends how I feel, sometimes I play 30, other times I play 2000
At a guess an average session would be 600-700 hands

Generally its good to have a routine, so for me playing about 1000 hands each session is best, sometimes though i'll only play 600, others ill play 1500, but on average it about 1000. I don't have a stop loss, I just stop if I feel I'm playing badly

One of the main problems I have with poker is not playing enough, half the time I seem to go on tilt over nothing. So im trying to make my focus playing as many hands as possible, and pretty much ignoring whether im up or down.

If I was down 10 buy ins I would definitely stop, I cant remember the last time I lost more than 5 or 6 buyins though, similarly if I was at the softest table ever I would probably keep playing.

As cardshark alluded to, I really want to get a routine going. I can tend to get pretty lazy and do loads of other stuff before I get round to poker, so I'm going to try and play 1.5k hands a day before I do anything else (bar breakfast!). I think having a target will help me.

I'd sit out for about 4 minutes an hour and smoke a cigarette and I do find this is necessary to keep up concentration.

I don't agree with people who say "I generally try to play x amount of hands per day". I'm suspicious that these might be good-for-nothing rakeback grinders.

Personally I play whenever I feel like it, and stop when I think it's optimial for me to stop. If you have an account on Pokerstars or Fulltilt you can pretty much play around the clock, Ipoker's table selection can get poor at certain times.

Depends on my mood, could be anything from 200 to 1,000. I used to fire off emails, download music and a million other things while multitabling :o Thank God I've gotton more disciplined and started to pay attention and focus when I'm not in a hand.

i only play about 500 hand sessions atm. and i've managed to cut out all the web browsing and other stuff i used to do, just listen to music and play poker now.

Even when I 1 tabled I never did other stuff like send mails, read forums or watch tv. No idea how people do that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭HiCloy

Yeah do other stuff too, watch soccer etc, more tables i'm playing less other stuff I do

Sessions I prefer to think of in terms of time than hands, play for 1-2 hours usually
