    HI

I've applied for a job in a local authority & just recently received notification to attend for interview. Gonna spend the weekend doing prep work for said interview. I'm coming from the private sector. Have always worked there.

Just one statement in the job spec has me slightly perturbed & I'm a bit concerned that they may focus on this in the interview: ''desirable: knowledge and experience of working in a local authority''. Can someone give me a few pointers on how to answer this or what should I expect when working for local government when compared to private sector???

    All reponses greatly appreciated!!!!

    Tks

    JOM

It depends is it for an admin position or a professional position?

    Tis a professional position.

Then it is not as important a prerequisite as for an admin grade. It is a part of the marking scheme and worth about 150 marks out of 600.

Job specs are quite often exaggerated so the company can get the best candidates possible for the lowest possible wage. Don't be surprised if everything on a job spec isn't needed. I was told I needed a high level of Unix knowledge for my current job. When I went to the interview they were happy that I even knew how to switch on a computer and what a network is...

There is a big difference between an essential crirtia and a desirable criteria on a person spec.

Do prepare an answer if you are asked a question on this - how transferable your skills are, how you have adapted to different working environments etc.
