i would say no, some others will say yes.

unless you were living 5 minutes from college then i'd definitely say no.

they don't sit well on them arm tables they have in colleges either.

I have a 17" and with a backpack it's what I'd call manageable but I wouldn't consider it that portable. I don't mind it but for most people I'd say they'd prefer a 15" or smaller.

    I defiantly wouldn't. 15" or smaller ftw.

Depends on what you're doing in college ofc. Design etc a bigger screen is a massive benefit.

Why do you need a 17" laptop tho, what are you using it for. if you dont need one then definitely go for a 15"

Maybe you should put two flour bags in your backpack with some books and carry it around for a day?Prolly best way to see what itll be like.

hmm the 17 inch screen would definitely be handy for CAD anyways, my brother has one of them 17inch screen laptops but he has a car so it's kind of a moot point but i couldn't see him working with CAD with a screen < 17".

    that's assuming you'll be doing CAD cause i haven't a clue lol.

If you are doing engineering/science a 17" isnt necessary a 15" would do fine for what you will need to be honest so save your money and your back and shoulders.

I used my 17" laptop through college and lived about a 20 minute walk away. It was heavy but once it was in a backpack there really wasn't any problem.

The bigger screen will usually result in a shorter battery life.

Buy in a shop for that price and those specs? Not gonna happen tbh. Especially if you want a decent gfx card. Internet is your best bet.

sorry for the graphics card i really meant something that can run C&C generals and not crash everytime i try to play it

im think now of either the acer aspire 5920 http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/692890#productInformationSection
    for €549

or the compaq Presario CQ50-110EM http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/039078#productInformationSection
    for about €599

which do ye think is better?

Between those two, the Compaq looks better. 2GB is plenty of RAM; better graphics, bigger HDD; lightscribe DVDRW.
