Megane making funny noise?

My gf's Megane coupe 1.6 auto started making a loudish grinding noise on the overrun today, it disappeared immediately when I accelerated or put the car into neutral. Any ideas?

Never really heard an engine making funny noises on the overrun ...could it be the auto box ?

I once had a noise that I swore was something "grinding" and which got louder on the overrun. Turned out that it was blow in the exhaust at the manifold which was producing a rough wheezing noise.
