I was wondering if anyone know what times trinity had their holidays on at, as I am planning to go on a holiday with school chums from the 7th-14th of january, but I need to see if trinity is on holidays at this time.

I checked the "ask about trinity thread" on modularisation etc, but the link given by myth says you need to have a password and all that.

    Thanks.

Last year we finished up in early december but went back to college the same week as the secondary schools.

It's likely Trinity will be back on 5th January next year.

Trinity starts back on the 7th (or as near as possible) every year.

I'm doing a night class and these are the dates we have been given:
Michaelmas term, nine weeks, commencing Tuesday, 7 October 2008.
Hilary term, nine weeks, commencing Tuesday, 6 January 2009.
Trinity term, six weeks, commencing Tuesday, 31 March 2009.

So presumably it's the Monday of each of those weeks that the college re-opens.

Aww , Raah! is left out by circumstance yet again :(. That fellow can't catch a break.

Edit: actually maybe I could just take a week off of college, for the holiday. How important is the stuff in first year?

Edit2: Seems I'll be only missing 4 days. I can j ust catch up when I get back I guess. thanks all!

Check your diary when you start, you'll probably have plenty of time off before Christmas. I think we finished about two weeks before any of the secondary schools last year.

I wouldn't advise missing anything, Raah, especially not at the start of term. If you're elegible for free fees you'll have to re-register within the first week of Hilary term (after Christmas), and it'd be most unfortunate if you couldn't do this because you were away and wound up footing the bill yourself!

But couldn't I do that and then head off on the 7th of january? I would really like to go on this trip you see.

I know several people who went away for the first week of term in january twice, they just re-registered when the came back. They is supposed to be a late fee, but they didn't pay it either of the times they re-registered late. Do it at your own risk etc. etc. but its certainly possible.
As regards missing a week of lectures, its entirely dependent on whether you think you can afford to miss them, you're the only one who can judge that. Some people will be lost if they miss a day of lectures, others will only even turn up to one day of lectures. Depends on the course as well obviously and whether there will be assignments due in in that week.

Well what's your opinion as an ex TP student? Do you think I can afford to miss 4 days?. Assume I have an average apptitude for physics etc.

You're TP so eh? I'm not really sure - I went to practically zero lectures in SS, but practically all of them in JF (as in I missed 4 or something). I wouldn't worry about the physics portion of it so much (though remember you will be missing one lab session), as it is largely a rehash and continuation of LC physics. The maths will be harder to catch up on (there's more of it as well), but certainly doable if you ensure you get the notes and more importantly read them ASAP as otherwise you could easily fall behind and become lost in lectures, which will just make things harder.
Ultimately, yeah I'd say you will be alright once you put the work in to make up for it, but you may have to work harder for a couple of weeks to catch up properly. I would advise copying maths notes you've missed by hand rather then photocopying them as well, as you're more likely to read them that way.

hmm, I think I will take the holiday so, and just sacrafice a weekend to fully catch up (I assume I'll be very confused inthe 3 or so classes I have on the week I return on). And maybe read stuff on the plane or something... hahahhhha, probably not though.

I've just finished JF Maths (and so have done all of the maths courses you'll be doing next year, except mechanics), and I'd say you'll be grand for the maths at least. You might miss one of the weekly problem sets though (which counts for end of year, but not very much, less than a percent anyway). Analysis sticks very close to the notes (which are online anyway), and 4 days isn't missing too much if you spend a few hours going over them and doing the end of week questions. If you can do these you're grand, otherwise ask questions at the weekly tutorial.

As for linear algebra, Vlad (the lecturer) has office hours that people rarely use, so go to him and ask him what you missed if you need to. Linear is really difficult to learn from notes, the way Vlad lectures you really need to be there (and often even then things aren't very clear). But one-on-one he's very good at explaining things, and he's generally happy to help even if you've missed lectures. Again, once you can do the weekly problem sets you're fine.
