Has anybody here done Sociology as part of the Arts Omnibus?

Its description is quite vague on UCD's website so I'm wondering what kind of stuff is actually covered on the course.

Does it cover things like Nazi Germany (just as an example), the spiral of silence, and that sorta stuff? Why people act the way they do in groups etc? Or does it revolve around statistical figures of population increases and the likes..I'm not really sure what it is!

    Cheers

You should find all the information you need on the available modules here:

    http://www.ucd.ie/sociology/undergraduateprogrammes/moduleinformation/

Otherwise you can call up to the undergrad office at F104 (b)?

Just looking at the modules you can do, I did them all last year.

Foundations of Sociological Thought: This looks at three of the main sociologists that will be central to almost evything that you do throughout the year(Marx, Durkheim, Weber). Its divided up to look at each person individually, and examines their fields of study, and their approaches to how they viewed society and commented on it. Helps to be able to compare them to each other come exam time.

Intro to Sociology: This is a general overview to what society is, and what studying sociology is. It is broad, but not as detailed as others, as it tries to introduce the student to thinking differently about society, about Why things happen and when, and not just thinking "Oh, this happened now, good!". Lectures by Aogon Mulcahy...legend!

Contemp. Irish Culture & Society: Exactly what it says on the tin...this module looks at the culture of Ireland through history, and also society. This module is divided into two parts, one for culture, the other for society. Culture would relate to certain aspects like the church, their role, GAA/sports. Society looks more towards modern times, and the changes that have taken place in society, and also why these changes have happened. Great help to identify links btween the two.

Sociology in Practice:(...did not like this one, but I shall explain it. This module looks at the different ways of conducting sociological research, while also using the different approaches to sociology(functionalism, conflict, etc.) It uses case studies and visuals(video lectures) to assist in learning. Also kinda looks at the likes of Marx etc. to see their approaches, but mainly others. In hindsight, handy enough, and also important for if carrying sociology on after 1st year.

On a general note, if you do do sociology(and anyone else considering it here), go to all tutorials. Easiest way to pick up marks(normally 20% of module), and thats for doing a small bit reading and short summary.
