Yet another reason (number 999,233) why you should never part with your bank card at a retail point of sale.

When I am in Ireland or Britain, I just walk out of the shop leaving my intended purchases on the counter / in the trolley, if I don't see a clean point of sale set-up. By clean, I mean the the PIN pad/card reader facing me, so I can insert the card, enter my PIN and remove it when done - with no hope of anyone reading the magnetic stripe to skim my details.

If it is a filling station, and I have filled up with fuel, I just pay cash and never visit that establishment again.

Retailers who instruct / allow their staff to take possession of customer's cards during the transaction processing cycle should be prosecuted by the Gardai for theft of data and aiding and abetting crime.
