Wikipedia lists Amy's music partially as Jazz so I'd like to download similar music which I'm pretty sure would have to come from another time but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone help me out?

This post is duplicated in the Soul & R 'n' B forum.

er, Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. But if you're looking for more jazz-lite type stuff I'd say check out the charts!

Hmmm... Maybe the above-mentioned in herbie's post, and Cassandra Wilson also:

Can I please just say.... that while I do like and respect Amy Winehouse she is no way comparative to Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald!!! Not only do their physical talents far outweigh her own, but the music is completely different. What they did was jazz, really jazz, sang the standards and in some cases (mostly Ella) improvised over the changes.... thats jazz.
What Amy Winehouse does is more soul then anything else, I would compare her with Aretha Franklin quicker then any of the jazz greats.
If you're looking for older music along the same lines, check out Etta James - now she really had a heartbreaking sound. Also very early diana ross would be similar as well Dione Warwick and maybe some Earth Kitt
Diana Krall is way more jazz then Amy Winehouse and not along the same lines at all. She does or certainly she used to do what real jazz singers do.... take jazz standards and interpret them in her own way and improvise over the changes.

Would agree entirely - what Amy Winehouse does is not Jazz, more like soul or even pop?, and in my opinion nowhere near the same league as any of the other female singers mentioned here.....yes, you can hear the influences of Etta James, Nina Simone, etc but that's a bit like comparing a ford escort to a lamborghini.......(obviously not a fan!)

oh thank god, I thought I was going to be lynched!:D
Actually I do kinda like Amy Winehouse, I wouldn't totally discredit her or what she does but like you said there's a ford or theres a ferrari.....

I agree, I was just suggesting some artists for the OP to check out, I wasn't comparing or making a judgement.

Tbh I always thought pop snobs were the worst:

"I'm not listenin to that crappy jazz stuff, it's four people playin different songs at once "

    or simply:
    "That's crap, turn it off"

Now, debate goes in this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055360796
