New series of Sky Cops starts on BBC 1 tonight at 2000hours for interested parties.

From the blurb: "With three new helicopters worth 15 million, London's elite air support unit must learn new tricks and master a machine that has been hailed as the most advanced police helicopter in the world."

Dammit .. if only I wasn't gone out! Sounds pretty good though, wonder what format it will take? High speed chases? Surveilance? General flying about?

We're using the EC145, I think its the newer version of what AGS are flying, EC135.

having had some experiance of directing helo,s (in me army day,s) i found when liasing with the RUC inspector,s they generley said street name,s, and left of such an such
instead of nth, 100mt south 250 mt and not using grid referance co/ord,s.
that,s why only military trained guy,s could talk to the pilot.

I wonder do the british cops call it what we have come to call it since the air units began?

    "when pigs fly"?

Honestly, I still smile when someone says it.

Dont know about the 145 but I know the 135 have limited distance problems when fully loaded.

Thats why GASU still use the Squirrel a fair bit.

As was shown on the program we sacked the Squirrel as its not a reliable aircraft and spent more time on the ground than in the air. The 145 has twice the airtime over the 135 and increases the top speed from 140mph to 175mph. It also has double the payload and can deploy an SFO (Specialist Firearms Officer) Team, with fast-rope capability. Looks the epitome of sexy policing.

    We run 3 choppers, 99 and 98 callsigns, with a spare 24/7.

From personal experience, great resource and the observers are top drawer.

Joker - in the UK pigs do indeed fly ;)

foxhoundone - I've had occasion to direct Air Support on a number of jobs, where suspects have gone to ground mostly; i.e getting em to illuminate an area using their nightsun or using IR. Though our pilots are all ex-forces, the front and rear observers are police officers and use standard police radio procedure so speaking to ASU has never been an issue.

Did they wear sunglasses and speak with Italian accents??

The AGS tried sexy policing but the Cork lads ruined it with their accents :D:D
