Nominations open for new Mod(s)

    Evening all,

I've been annoying Apexaviour about when would be a good time to do this so I thought I might as well just chuck up the thread and see what happens with it. There's no rush really on this but it's something I think I'd prefer to get started, so anyways...

The story is that one (or possibly two) new mod(s) is/are needed for this forum. Apex will of course be staying around and I've just been modding this forum temporarily 'til someone new is found and since I've been out of Trinity a while now it makes no sense for me to continue the position.

If you're interested please feel free to nominate yourself, or alternatively if you would consider someone good for the position throw their name in the hat.

This is not a popularity contest and canvassing will just make you look like a bit of an asshat.

    Cheers,

    Dónal / Myth

I nominate Shay. I like his style.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Additionally both Andrew and PurplefistMixer, both have been around boards for along time and their both not muppets in my book.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭Mark200

I shall take up your offer and nominate myself :P

I haven't been around long compared to the two nominated above, and I don't post loaaaaads but I'm on every day and read pretty much everything in the LC board and the TCD board, so I'd be around to handle anything that needs to be...moderated.

I'm a mod on two other forums (a football one and a teen one) so I'm not new to how things work.

I'd like to nominate Awayindahils. Seems only right to nominate Boston as well; iirc, he hasn't been banned for quite a while now :p

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭Scarinae

I would nominate Awayindahils except, er, she's been nominated already... But I like that she wants to attract new people and lurkers like myself into posting a bit more

As flattered and all as I am to be nominated to mod a board I've posted now 4 times on, I've already got the LC board on my plate. I'd swap, though! : p

Sure I may as well throw my hat in the ring too.

I think you should swop, it would be alot better to have someone actually attending TCD to be a mod here. Plus you are just going in so that could be up to 4 years of mod action.

This is me nominating purplefist myth. I think cokeheadmother would be good too. Cokeheadmother gives alot of help in the leaving cert forum and I think cokeheadmother is attending tcd too. Cokeheadmother was nominated for leaving cert forum too. I am not sure of cokeheadmother's gender :)

Shay / Awayindahills get my vote!

    Are we voting PR?

    1)Awayindahils
    2)jmccrohan
    3)Shay_562

But I still think Myth should stick around.

I put you forward because I think the best possible solution is to get two first years or second years to be mods. I've seen you "around" so to speak and you haven't given me the impression that you're a muppet. That coupled with the fact you've moderated before and clearly know how boards works made you and obvious choice regardless of how many posts you have here. I've a similar attitude towards Andrew. We'll role the dice and see how it all comes out.

Also you should probably drop the leaving cert and junior cert forum, with any luck within six months you'll probably find it hard to relate to those doing their leaving.

Ps, I'm in no way interested in being mod. I'd have to change my posting style too much.

The JC board is trivial to moderate (it gets one post a day if that), but I did voice my concerns to Myth about moderating the LC board while in college. I'll see how it pans out, anyway. Obviously I'd prefer to moderate something that's relevant to me, but I'd be reluctant to come charging in here waving my spikey ban-mace to a community I'm not familiar with.

In which case my vote goes to Boston. Actually, its not a bad point. I give one anti-vote for Shay. I enjoy his posts and wouldn't like to see them watered down by moddish responsibleness.

In seriousness, I like the idea of getting someone new in. If ye are going for two, I'd recommend a newbie + Hils. She already knows all our names, like.

That's exactly why he's my last choice. His put downs are hilarious and I wouldn't want him to have to "set an example".

Yeah, she's definitely a good choice, but she hasn't said if she's interested yet/wants the responsibility. Well Hils, are you up for it?

That concern for taking into account the existing community is why you'd probably make a good moderator. We're also trying to encourage a new community of users here. Some of us will stick around to help, but it needs new blood to get it off the ground.

But I still think Myth should stick around.

I think we both (/all) know that I'll still be posting in this forum in the forseeable future :). But me modding here would be a little silly, and for what it's worth I agree with Boston that it would be great getting some new blood in here.

Just making sure. I don't want to be the only outsider looking in and pretending I know what's going on.

Yep, I'm definetely be interested in modding. And I'm quite happy to take on the responsibility. I did deflect Agent Smith's comment to that nature a while ago, but I would really like to mod.

I do however see the logic in new blood. It would be great to have people who are just starting out in TCD modding, especially to help bring in new people. I actually know pfm both from boards and in the real world (dundundun) and I think she would do a good job of modding here.
She already knows all our names, like.

Glad to know that I make you all feel special and loved. But isn't that one of the things we're supposed to be working on.

If we are having two new mods i think perhaps we should have one from both the east and west ends of the college. Might be able to relate more etc.

And one should be male and the other female, and one from the country and one from Dublin, and one should be a member of the hist and the other the phil. There are a millions things more important then the course the person is doing.

Of the people nominated so far (who haven't said that they don't want to chnage their posting style):

Faculty Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences:

    -Andrew
    -Awayindahils
    -Shay_562

Faculty of Engineering, Maths and Science

    -Kearnsr
    -Jmccrohan
    -Mark200
    -PurpleFistMixer

    Faculty of Health Science

    -Paperclip

    Unknown:

    -Cokeheadmonster

ApeX is from the Faculty of Engineering, Maths and Science.

In the past most of the mods have been from the science end of college and it never seemed to lead to an imbalanced view of colelge life.

Awayindahils and shay have always been great at answering my newbie questions and are pretty active on boards, my vote would go to both of them.

Boston seems to know what he's doing too.

For the sake of having the health sciences represented, I'd like to nominate Paperclip.

Also, Jmccrohan makes a good point about having east and west end mods. I know Boston sees this as splitting hairs, but I think most of us will agree that there's a big enough gap between both sides, and we want both sides to be represented well.

Ok at the moment there is no representation from the Arts side of college and I have never felt a reason to complain.

Representation doesn't come into this. This isn't the Students' Union. There could be three UCD students modding here, or three men, or three women, or three of anyone.

    I would like to second....no wait third....maybe seventhth...Awayindahils

Reason: Generally helpfuness, quick replies, balanced posts, involved in varied aspects of college and the like...

I would second a vote for an incoming JF so as to attract new people and improvz da cred wit da young gangstas, respect.

What I really mean is a JF and SS would be a balanced enough side of college. Us SFs will just struggle on with our random & variable posts.

Spelling error - I put 2 "l"s in "hills" - that would be like voting for George Ush

I'm worthy of anti-votes? Aww, you guys are the sweetest! I didn't know I was that bitchy and irresponsible! I'm actually kinda touched. *sniff* :o

Oh, and great big "Word!" to the "Representation doesn't matter a damn" school of thought. The mods are there to keep the peace and to deal with idiots and trolls in an appropriate manner, not to advance the agenda of any particular college faction (and I'm not even sure how the agenda of the Hamilton can be advanced through the medium of boards.ie ); in fact, I'd be more worried about a mod being appointed as the Hamilton Mod, with the concurrent responsibility of standing up for the Hamilton POV and all the implications of that in terms of their theoretical unbiasedness.

Also? Have the people campaigning for a Hamilton mod not noticed that ApeXaviour is still, like, right there? Well, possibly he's sitting in a dark room alone right now with a single tear rolling down his cheek at the neglect he's receiving, but you get the impression. Dude, maybe you need to start banning people just for the hell of it or something? You know, throw your mod weight around a bit?

I must be going crazy in work today as these posts had me in stiches. And yes the summer appears to blunt all academic skills.

Wow. I'm actually pretty ashamed of myself right now. I don't know what's happened to me; I blame accounting. And whiskey. Probably the latter more so than the former. (Man, good thing you didn't notice that I wrote "possible" instead of "possibly", or you might have really torn into me)

I trust whoever is picked will be fine :) but I'd say we only need one extra mod.

It's not the busiest of forums.

Well I recommend you get Boston and Awayindahills.

Apex can mod Boston and Awayindahills can mod the rest of the forum.

I reckon the new mod should be in situ in the next week or so as more and more first years are signing up and using the forum.

    +1 for Awayindahills.

I think - as a seasoned veteran of the TCD forum - that Boston would be a terrible .. no.. tyrannical.. whatsit terrific moderator.
