hi, in market for a mid range laptop, got it down to these three :

    17' acer aspire 5520g-554g32mi 8600m gs with 512 2 x 2 amd tl62 2.1ghz + 2gb ram 500 gb h drive 800 euro

    15' acer aspire 5520g-554g32mi 8600m gs with 512 2 x 2 amd tl62 2.1ghz + 4gb ram 320 gb h drive 800 euro
(same spec dell vostro/XPS = min1100 euro (INC VAT) with only nvidia 8400 gs 64 bit)

    15' msi megabook gx600-7225vhp 8600m gt with 512 + hdmi 2 x 2 intel duo 2.0 ghz +2 gb ram 250 gb h drive 800 euro.

any advice on which one is best ?

so really am thinking about the msi one as has hdmi on gfx card, but am not sure about the benefits of having hdmi on a gfx card - obviously this means i can connect to a hdmi screen, but how would this improve a normal dvd for example, as surely this would only be beneficial if I had a blu ray disc drive ?

cheers for advice in advance !

The 8600m GT is conciderably more powerfull than the 8600m GS (32 spu's vs. 16).
Some of the msi gaming notebooks come with cheesy flame graphics on them so look into that if it's of concern.
If you're not playing games on it then the 15" acer is portable and i think comes with a penryn processor which is a plus.

What do you plan on using this laptop for?

Cool, msi are far better value than the likes of dell for gaming notebooks:)
Where did you find those laptops? They're pretty good deals:cool:

go with the 15'. youll get better gaming performance off the slightly lower screen resolution (beleive me its a good tradeoff) and improved battery life from not having to power the larger LCD screen. Just upgrade the ram to 4GB for posterity's sake :)

I use HDMI to hook up to an HDTV sometimes purely because with VLC media player I can watch any DVD region I want - unlike the Home Theatre system. And when I'm feeling very fancy its fun to play Team Fortress on a 42 inch screen.
